Description
Jamex Brewing is the brainchild of Jeff and Kat Kaye.

They first were introduced to the craft beer world after spending several years in San Diego. They were immediately enamored with the craft beer culture. It was so laid back, creative, and inviting!

Jamex Brewing Co. prides itself on its use of a large variety of high quality malts, hops, and yeast strains in order to produce exceptional and true-to-style flavors. We purchase ingredients locally whenever possible.

Our small 2-barrel batch system gives us the ability to experiment and try new recipes all the time. We were tired of going to breweries and drinking the same thing every time. We wanted to have new beers on tap weekly so customers would always have a new beer to fall in love with every 7 days.

We are proud to be a part of Michigan’s newest beer city and take great pride in serving the very best beer for the very best people!

We love you St Clair Shores!

Brewery draught, 3/22/24. Clear blonde. Small, white head, lower retention. Somewhat timid nose with no big hop character. More of a reserved, lightly woody, lightly piney character with white bread-like malt behind it. In the mouth it's equally confounding. If this is 86 IBUs, you certainly can't tell. Pretty pedestrian. Medium-to-medium-light bodied, dry, somewhat bland, and really vague hop character with very low bitterness. Another just sort of there beer. A disappointing visit to Jamex, which almost never happens.

Draught at the brewery, 3/22/24. Clear, flaxen-blonde-golden. Small, somewhat persistent white head. Malty nose with creamy biscuit but no delicate/rich honey-like character. Sort of wet, almost vegetal/cellar character instead of a snappy, crisp yeast. Oddly absent fresh hop character showing little, if any spice. But it's clean. Clean and with a sort of wet, almost mushy malt and just about zero sweetness. Not all that crisp on the end, no snappy yeast, no bitter or fresh/spicy/herbal hop character. Just sort of there. Blandish. Clean.

Brewery draught, 12/28/23. Clear amber. Small, off-white head quickly to thin cover. Faint spice in the nose. Very timid. Clean, though. Wow this tastes like marijuana. Pretty cool. Fuzzy, sprucey, low acidity. As usual from these guys, deep malts and excellent attenuation. Great balance of malt and spruce. Happy birthday, Jesus!

Brewery draught, 12/28/23. Light brass with a hint of strawberry-blonde, clear, small, beige head sits at light cover. Lactic acid and lightly leathery, acidic apricots. Not as much Belgian character as the name may suggest. Clean, other than the somewhat forward lactic character. Lovely apricot flavor with lighter lactic acidity than the nose suggests. Chewy textures with a very dry finish. Lingering fruit and a hint of Belgian yeast. Would have liked to see this without the kettle souring.

Brewery draught, 12/28/23. Very slightly cloudy brass-golden. Small, neat, white head. Fruity, nutty, maybe a hint cidery. Clean, straightforward wheat. Cider-infused nuttiness with a hint of honey and soft, chewy textures. Little/no hops, low bitterness. Clean. A very unexciting American Wheat but well-done on all accounts with good malt depth and attenuation.

Brewery draught, 12/28/23. Heavily hazy, bronze-brass. Neat, medium-sized, off-white head, well-retained. Sweaty, farmy, rustic, highly mineralesque and earthy hops lend a variety of melon-laced tropical fruits. Crackery, sparse malts behind it. Clean, no resin. Good sulfur finish with light guava. Very dry, crackery, a touch thin-bodied with juicy, citrusy, melon and white wine accented by yuzu and lime zest. I like the full attenuation but it could use just a touch more body. That said, this is a 5.8% IPA, quite a bit lower than most. So I can mostly let that slide. Rustic, lo-fi hop character is charming and there's just enough bitterness.

7.2/10 Appearance 8 Aroma 7 Flavor 7 Texture 8 Overall 7
Brewery draught, 12/28/23. Clear amber, small, beige head to spotty cover immediately. Lightly butter nose, bit of toast but not much specialty malt. Maybe most of it crowded out by Diacetyl. Crisp, snappy, malty, dry. Maybe a touch of butter at first but the beers in such spectacular shape that I can't tell if it's actually Diacetyl or if it's just a flavor produced by the combo of base and specialty malt. Whatever the case, the beer is a knockout, with tastefully done hops, and honey and light buttercream drying out on a crisp finish. 7/4/8/4/16 Draught again on 3/22/24. Better than the Czech Pils, in that there was more malt character and a little more crisp yeast, but the hops are serverely lacking and the body a bit feeble and somewhat blandish overall in flavor, again. 6/4/7/4/13

Brewery draught, 11/17/23. Lightly hazy, light blackberry juice mixed with ruddy cranberry. Small, pinkish head steadily to ring. Bright lactic acidity, not punchy, with excellent fruit acid and lingering mineral. Clean. Juicy, fruity, wheat-heavy, great acidity yet it dulls with light salinity, rounding out very balanced. Lingering juice, acid, mineral, fruit. An actual real German gose with real fruit. So much lingering succulent fruit acidity yet never too tart. Deep malt and wheat, dry, clean.

Brewery draught, 11/17/23. Clear, hint of chill haze. Medium-sized, white head, good retention. Blonde-golden. Just smells like sulphur and more mineral. Hint of apple and paper maché. Clean. Light, mildly fruity, touch of hops. Not quite as much mineral cones through in flavor. Only a hint of Kölsch yeast. But it's clean, malty, well-attenuated. Nice to know that the floor on this brewer's beers is very high. If you can consistently make a malty, dry, clean beer, it's hard to go wrong.

Brewery draught, 11/17/23. Clear, medium-dark amber. Small, pinkish-grey head quickly to ring. Touch of roast/toast, with vanilla and pepper. Pretty hard to coax much out of this. Very light cherry, hint of leather. Clean, though, nothing crude. Soft, with light raisin, toast, black pepper and very well-attenuated cherries. Malty and nicely dry. Wish there was a bit more bright cherry flavor, but still impressed with the maltiness and lack of any crude character here.
