Description
When something is truly exceptional it earns your loyalty. That’s why we named our beer after George Vanderbilt’s beloved St. Bernard, Cedric. Family photographs capture moments of Cedric enjoying sunshine on the Loggia and sneaking in quiet naps in the library. Wherever George was, Cedric was sure to follow. That’s the kind of loyalty that inspires us to craft a quality beer—a beer worth your loyalty.

In fact, we’d been thinking of creating a line of Biltmore beers bearing Cedric’s name for many years. Then, when the decision was made to open a tavern on the estate, aptly named Cedric’s Tavern, as part of the new Antler Hill Village, the opportunity presented itself to turn the idea of producing a line of beer into reality. That’s how Biltmore Brewing Company was established.

Each beer in Cedric’s line is crafted to the exacting standards that George Vanderbilt appreciated and is made in the traditional English style. Craft beer enthusiast and newly appointed manager of Cedric’s Tavern, Bryan McIntosh has led the style selection of these new brews.

Admin Note: Beers are contract brewed off-site.

Pretty basic IPA, mild notes of cracker malt and grain, followed by a touch of grapefruit rind and pine. Eh.

Nutty, with hints of cocoa and caramel, finished by pumpernickel bread and a mild floral bitterness on the fade. Okay, about what I was expecting for a house beer on the Biltmore tour.

Location: Draft at the Biltmore, 1/1/15

Aroma: There's a clean hop component, a little orange/citrus, and some pale malts
Appearance: It pours a clear orange-gold color with a small white head
Flavor: The flavor is along the same lines, lightly sweet, with a clean bitterness on the finish
Palate: This one has a nice, clean feel, fairly light body, with a lively carbonation
Overall Impression: This is a pretty solid, lighter example of the style. Fairly quaffable. There's not much to fault here as far as major flaws go. It worked nicely with the food as well.

Location: Draft at the Biltmore, 1/1/15, My 100th Brown Ale Rating!

Aroma: The nose is light, sweet malts, toast, some caramel, and some nutty notes
Appearance: Pours a mostly clear brown color with a decent sized head and medium lace
Flavor: The taste is clean and a little sweet, malty, with a good balance from the light bitterness
Palate: It drinks very nicely, with a clean and smooth mouthfeel, and a nice finish
Overall Impression: Pretty nice example of an English style brown. It isn't an out of this world beer, just a clean, drinkable, enjoyable one. There's always a place for that.
