Since 1926, brewing has no longer been a matter of chance at Bénifontaine, but rather is an art which has been passed down from generation to generation. Thoroughness, patience, authenticity: these have been the key words for Castelain bières de garde and seasonal beers since the creation of the brewery.

To celebrate my S4aD on RB while being in Bordeaux...A French Tripel (listed as biere de garde....). 25 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden orange with a huge, slowly collapsing white head. Aroma is cornish and malty, light sweet note. Sweet caramelish flavoured, light bitterness and vague spice note. Lingering sweet caramelish finish, vague metallic note. Sweet little triple, I don’t get why this is listed as Bière de Garde.

65cl swingtop bottle of Artisan Brasseur Organic Lager from Asda. Amber with a thick billowing white head; hazy on the pour, but bright and clear in the glass. Aroma has wheat and corn grains, and some honey. Soapy mouthfeel, with some light grain flavours; and a decent dry, citrus, grassy hop, bitterness to finish.

Bottle, 75cl corked. Pours a clear, golden body under a minimal white head. Malty and fruity nose with a little grainy touch. Similar flavor, malty and fruity with a grainy backbone, leading to a dry finish with fruits and some bitterness. Medium to full body. A decent and easy drinkable beer, but there’s nothing special with it. Just a plain Biere de Garde. 090821

Bottle, 75cl corked, courtesy of MiP. It is an almost clear golden beer with a small off-white head. Sweet, caramel flavor with some fruits and alcohol. There’s some fruityness in the mouth too, a fine bitterness, and sweet caramel. Medium body, nicely carbonated. Rather short finish that is more warming than necessary. A quite decent one, dangerously easy drinkable for a beer like this. A bit on the malty side, meaning it lacks on hops. 090821

Has a syrupy, wheaty aroma. Very nice pour with a good golden colour and plenty of head. Nice lemony flavour, some malts, semi-sweet finish.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of MiP. Pours a clear deep golden with an off-white head. Sweetish malty nose. Quite full-bodied with a solid malt base and a rather subdued bitterness. Some alcohol in the finish. 220809

Ooh, nice smoky steam pouring out of the just-corked big bottle. Pours very nicely with a strong fluffy head, but unfortunately very little is identifiable in the aroma. Taste is a very average Bière de Garde style of malts and some syrupiness, which means there’s not much to make this one stand out from the pack of widely distributed beers of this type. Found at my local supermarket, and you can find better Bières de Garde there aside from this one for pretty much the same price.
