Description
The Sarajevska Brewery opened in 1864 as the first local industry and shortly became one of the leading producers in Bosnia, with considerable amounts exported to Montenegro, Croatia and Albania. Just before World War I, Sarajevska Pivara was producing 116,000 hectoliters per year, and in 1916 it passed the limit of 150,000 hl.

The brewery survived both World Wars. In 1957, the first automatic line for bottling beer with a capacity of 5,000 bottles per hour was put into operation, and in the following 15 years, all facilities were reconstructed, so the production capacity was increased to 400,000 hectoliters per year.

At the start of the eighties the Sarajevo brewery was in the biggest crisis during its entire history, and in the former Yugoslavia it fell to the 20th place out of a total of 28 breweries in the former Yugoslavia. The decline was successfully stopped by the arrival of Mr. Hilma Selimović as general director. By 1991, the Brewery was modernized, and its production increased by three times, so the Sarajevo Brewery was ranked among the four leading breweries in the former Yugoslavia.

Sarajevo Brewery is the leading B&H brewery. company in the production of beer, carbonated and non-carbonated water, soft drinks and juices. Production takes place at the company's headquarters in the old part of Sarajevo, on an area of about 17,400 m2.

Can. (4.5% alc.) Glassy, pale golden with a small white head. Aroma is solely butterscotch. Amazing. Malt and butterscotch flavor, with some hops. Thin body and a low carbonation. Strangest pale lager so far. (060213)

New review (as Sarajevsko Export (4.9%) Poured a pale yellow body, just a shade darker than the 4.5% version. Medium sized thick head that went at a medium pace. A passable light grainy/malty nose. Water water water. Some light bite, maybe hop. Malty? Eeeh... no. The 4.5% version showed more character. It’s not offensive mind you, there’s too little taste in there for it to be offensive, but it definitely isn’t a good beer. Old review (August 2005):0.33l can, 4.5% alc. Brought from somewhere in BiH from a friend, so thanks to him. To the beer. If there’s one thing that this beer is good at, it’s the head. Enormous, thick, white, leaves lots of lacing. Unfortunately, this is also the palest beer I’ve ever seen, it’s a very, pale ochre/yellow. The nose is ok, just malty and nothing else. The taste... well it’s everything I expected when I saw the colour of this beer. It’s extremely watery, with a very faint hops taste that gradually becomes an empty metallic taste. Some faint malt (not good) lurks in the background. It’s not offensive, it’s simply, empty. Then again, if it had more taste, it really would be. "No body" sums it up very nice. I guess this is a Bosnian take on American light beers. It’s also a disappointment since the other two BiH beers I’ve had were above average. (3/2/3/1/5=

A light yellow beer with a disappearing white head. The aroma is metallic hoppy combined with notes of corn, that gives it a slight sourness. The flavor is corny sour with a dry hoppy end.
