Description
In spring 2011, Peter Curtin embarked on a new endeavour: He set up the Burren Brewery in the Roadside Tavern in Lisdoonvarna. The building, which in 1865 started off as a pub, then was expanded into a bakery, now also harbours a micro-brewery under its roof. At the same time it is an eatery and a renowned music venue for traditional and contemporary music.

Peter realised very quickly how complicated and time-consuming it was to brew his own beer - it really is a labour of love. He enrolled the help of a Master Brewer, and the result can now be tasted in the Roadside Tavern.

Served on tap into a UK pint glass at the Roadside Tavern, the only outlet for this beer, Lisdoonvarna Co Clare, Eire - Jan ’12. Worth also noting that at present (Jan ’12) it is only available on tap and no bottling takes place. They are a friendly bunch and whilst I didn’t broach the subject I’m sure they’d be more than hapy to fill a growler or some form of recepticle for you! Pours a rich amber-gold colour with a thin white head that was maintained throughout drinking. Straw/grass smells penetrate the nose along with subdued malts and a little hop aroma. Taste wise, crisp, refreshing, grassy perhaps a hint of something sweet in the brew - maybe honey? Bitter dry aftertaste. Good mouthfeel for a lager with low carbonation, plenty of lacing in the glass on this beer. In summary a decent effort at ’craft’ lager. One thing to point out (along with all the Burren beers), they didn’t detail the ABV on the pump clips and admitted to tweaking production slightly, ’as and when’, so certain batches come out stronger than others! The younger barman thinks on this date it was mid 5%ABV - Good stuff ABV mystery aside!

They are a friendly bunch and whilst I didn’t broach the subject I’m sure they’d be more than hapy to fill a growler or some form of recepticle for you! Pours a ruby colour verging on copper with a decent half finger of white head that maintained itself well throughout drinking. Vanilla was the main aroma with a little bubblegum and fruit coming off as well. Sweet malts and sugars in the taste, light caramel flavour and a little vanilla but nowhere near as much as the smell! Pleasant mouthfeel fairly smooth, rich and creamy, massaging the throat with beery goodness as it went inside, lots of lacing in the glass throughout drinking. small amount of carbonation, but hardly noticeable. One thing to point out (along with all the Burren beers), they didn’t detail the ABV on the pump clips and admitted to tweaking production slightly, ’as and when’, so certain batches come out stronger than others! The younger barman reckoned this batch was mid 5% ABV’s but has been well into the 6’s! Good stuff ABV mystery aside!

Pours to a dark black colour with dark brown hues around the edge when held to the light. A monster finger and a half of creamy white head domiates the glass! The head subsided during drinking but there was still a good half finger in place at the end of the pint! A Rich roasted malt aroma hit the nose with a hint of coffee. Rich, slightly burnt malt and sugar on the palate, with a roasted coffee taste in the background. Good mouthfeel, smooth, rich, creamy, and a most welcome break from Guinness! Overall a very good stout rich in flavour and aroma. One thing to point out (along with all the Burren beers), they didn’t detail the ABV on the pump clips and admitted to tweaking production slightly, ’as and when’, so certain batches come out stronger than others! The older barman simply stated that all the beers are a little stronger than the commercial beers on tap (not very helpful) and the second younger bar man was a little more specific in saying that the ’Black’ was typically in the mid 4. something % range.
