Description
In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition.

500 ml bottle, from Vaaland 1889, Bryne. ABV is <1,2%. Golden brown colour, large white head. Moderate aroma of smoked malts. Thin mouthfeel as expected, but not bad for a low ABV beer. Dry flavour of smoked malts, hints of smoked meat. Moderate hops.

400ml, draft.
Pours dark amber with medium, off-white, creamy head.
Nose is leftover ham in the refrigerator. That's my best guess, sorry :))
Strong smoked flavor at the beginning, more of a red ale afterwards. Faint smokey finish.

On tap at Hops, Crewe. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a medium sized but transient cream head and medium carbonation. There’s a very strong smoky aroma, mainly of ham and kippers but also some fruity hints. In the mouth it is quite sweet with sharp undertones. But the smoky taste overwhelms all. Flavour includes rye bread, roasted malts and earth as well, with hints of bitterness, dark fruit and chocolate cake coming later. Finish is both fruity and smoky – this is nice.

Bottles. Clear amber/ruby body with an off-white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of salami, oak, smoked cheese and raisin. Flavour of underripe plum, red apple, earth, raisin and smoked ham. Medium body with a slick mouthfeel. Soft fizz. A wonderful beer, which doesn’t seem to have quite as intense a smoke flavour as other Schlenkerla beers I’ve tried.

500ml bottle. Pours a mostly clear (before the sediment dropped in) golden with a huge thick frothy white head, great retention once settled.
Aroma is wonderfully smokey - meat and peat, ham, sausages, bready malt. Taste is similar with wheaty bready malt flavours and noticeable hop bitterness (citrus), peaty and meaty smoke overtones throughout. Excellent mouthfeel/texture, very soft, bubbly, massaging carbonation. Feels like a much bigger beer than it actually is. Really enjoyed this, far more than I expected to.

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines. Clear deep chestnut. Solid beige foam. Nose has light ham smoke. Wood char. Dark fruit. Some bonfire toffee. Taste is semi sweet with some dryness. Easy drinking affair with rolling soft carbonation. Gets a little earthy and woody bitter on the finish.
