Description
In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition.

Bottle to weizen glass.
Appearance: dark brown color with a three finger eggshell white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some messy lace
Aroma: soft sweet wheat, light cocoa powder, earthy tones and some smokiness, slight roasty nuts and some nuttiness; delicate spicy tones from the yeast
Flavor: takes all the prior mentioned aromas and blends them smoky sweet with a underscore of spicy yeastiness, quick aftertaste of some wheat and smoke
Texture: light to medium bodied; fair sessionability; somewhat smooth; finishes crisp and a touch of yeasty spice
Overall: another knockout from Aecht Schlenkerla, I definitely would bang again!

Can to mug.
Appearance: dark brown color with a three finger eggshell white to slightly khaki foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some mild lace
Aroma: deep dark roasted and smoky malts wrap around some earthiness, a touch of nuttiness and a nice bready toastiness. Sly yeastiness is in there with some light grassy hops
Flavor: takes all the prior noted aromas to blend smoky sweet and a rich roasty tone; light smoky aftertaste
Texture: light to medium bodied with a fine sessionability about it; very smooth along my tongue; finishes semi-crisp and somewhat smooth
Overall: an extremely awesome Rauchbier I would very much love to have again.

Bottle to lager glass.
Appearance: dark brown color with a three finger eggshell white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light sticky lace
Aroma: smoky woody meatiness - bold and up front; subtle sweet earthy tones, sweet ash, delicate cocoa powder, subtle umami
Flavor: blends all the prior noted aromas to a rounded sweet smokiness; super subtle aftertaste of smoked meats
Texture: light to medium bodied, some sessionability, smooth along my tongue; finishes semi-crisp and semi-dry.
Overall: an absolutely wonderful Rauchbier more than worthy of returning to.

Poured into a mug.
Appearance: dark brown color with a finger's worth of eggshell white foamy head. Once it dissipated, some light messy lace stuck to my glass
Aroma: huge amount of smoked meats - somewhat ham-like, a little bit of bacon-like, some woody spice, delicate cocoa powder far underneath
Flavor: blends all the prior mentioned aromas smoky sweet and adding in a superb level of woody spice underneath; mild aftertaste of smoke, ham and woody spice
Texture: light to medium bodied; some sessionability, so smooth along my tongue, finishes smoky sweet
Overall: an absolute lovely world class Rauchbier by one of my favorite breweries. Of course, I would love to have this again.

500ml bottle as part of a delivery from RAD Beer and drunk at home. Mid-gold and clear with a large rocky off-white head. Light smoke, a deep malty aroma with a metallic edge. Light, sweet taste, more smoke, leading to some gentle bittering hops and a short finish. Body's pretty watery even for the low alcohol content, but the full carbonation more than makes up for that. Maybe short of their best beers but this is a humdinger.
