Description
On a small abandoned farm back in 2002 William Frank and Else Birk started a small brew house focusing on quality and good craftsmanship. The brewery was not far from where the Grauballe man (a bog body that was uncovered in 1952 from a peat bog) was found - hence the name Grauballe Bryghus.

Grauballe Bryghus was in these premises until the year 2013. By then it had grown so big that it was time to move to larger premises where it is today.

(Bottle 66 cl) Pours a clear, dark mahogany with reddish hues. Lovely beige head. The aroma is pure roasted malt. Medium body with burned, malty accents. The finish is discreet and mellow only with a light bitterness from the dark malts. Unfortunately this is a bit overcarbonated. 130806

(Bottle 33 cl) Slightly hazy amber with a small, creamy, off-white head. Soft caramel aroma with touches of orange. Medium-bodied with a very soft mouthfeel. Malty with accents of caramel and oranges. Discreet bitterness. Not your typical Christmas beer, but very delicate indeed. 120806

A dark brown beer with a red shine underneath a thin orange head. The totally dominated by juniper berries - I like that. The flavor is lightly sweet with a good note of juniper berries, as well as heather and wood, leading to a dry end.

330 ml bottle, bought at Mahlers Vinhandel, Frederikshavn, Denmark. Unfiltered. Nearly black colour, large and creamy tan head. Lovely aroma of juniper berries first and foremost, roast malts and dark chocolate in the background. Flavour of roast malts, coffee and dark chocolate, maybe some liquorice too, the juniper berries are around but are not dominant. Moderately sweet, some faint acidic notes in the finish. Fairly bitter aftertaste, both from the roastiness and the hops. An excellent stout in my book, with an unusual but successful addition of juniper berries.
