A group of friends apparently decided to install a new brewery in the village of Aaigem some sixty years after the closure of the last one (Torrekens) so here we are, yet another new small beer-producing company in Belgium… Thanks to tderoeck for sharing the (75 cl) bottle. Mousy, thick and fluffy, pale beige, membrane-lacing head on a hazy chestnut brown beer with cherry red hue. Aroma of caramel, bubblegum, toasted bread, ground hazelnuts, baked banana, medlar, cloves, dry earth, tree leaves, vague hint of wet dog. Sweetish onset but quite restrainedly so, nowhere sticky, with hints of fig, dried banana and green pear, fizzily carbonated, smooth mouthfeel; a chewing gum-like effect persists underneath a caramelly and somewhat walnutty malt profile, sweetish but developing this bitterish toasty edge towards the end, supported by a herbal (albeit still soft) hop bitter note. Some clove-like phenols and vague gin-like alcohol are noticeable as well. Decent Belgian dubbel or ‘bruin’, notably more toasty and less sweet than the big commercial examples of the style, but not unlike several other small-scale dubbels or dubbel-ish brown ales made by Belgian breweries today. Technically correct as well so no complaints here – not all bad for a beginning microbrewery.
