Cask, handpump at The Shoulder of Mutton, Wantage, Oxon, 11.04.12 at award for local pub of the year Pours light gold with a white head. Fruity, crisp and refreshing with a wonderful zestiness throughout, tangy and hoppy, the Citra hops are pure heaven in this beer, another one of those stunning sub 4% beers. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8

10 Sep 2011: "Brewed with raw cocoa, vanilla pods, flaked oats, wheat and a complex blend of beautifully dark malts", so says the front label of my 500ml bottle. Poured into a UK pint sleeve, this is a dark, dark Stout, deep ruby red when held up to a strong light force, otherwise it’s black. The cream coloured head didn’t stay, which was a pity, appearance score drops because of that. Dark chocolate and malt molasses dominate the aromas, rich and warming. The taste and flavours mirror the smell, so dark chocolate and molasses, add some coffee and toffee, but without the sweetness of the toffee and you’ll be close to what I’m on about. Rich, nearly creamy and certainly full of flavour, this is a very good Stout. Couldn’t find all the ingrediants listed on the label, but this is well worth finding and trying.

Hand pulled pint in my local (The Cock Hotel, Wellington): Oct 2011; UK pint sleeve. Fairly light amber, bordering on golden body, with a thin but staying white head throughout the pint. Amarillo and Citra hops ensured the nose was hoppy, whatever malts were used stopped it becoming too bitter and hop dry in the taste: this was obviously hoppy by nature of its name, but it had a balance, even if the scales were heavily leaning towards the hop side. The actual taste was hop bitter and citrusy, with some bready maltiness just below the surface preventing the beer becoming to sharp or piney. Overall not bad at all, not quiet as explosive as the name suggests, but certainly hoppier than most UK brews, although some breweries (like this one) are beginning to produce hoppier beers than say two years ago.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before the end of Feb 2012, poured into a ’Batemans’ badged UK pint sleeve 4 Nov 2011. Light orange body, the wispy head disappeared before it arrived and what collar it produced was weak. The beer was clear, but boring in looks. The smell was poor, some orange notes and some sour citrus bits, but nothing much. The taste was citrusy and bitter, the malts doing very little in the way of flavouring, they just prevented the beer being too hop orientated. Both Barley and Wheat malts are used in the brew which has been made by the head brewer and the brewpubs head chef: according to the bottles rear label that is what they normally do. This beer goes with BBQ’s, fish and spicy dishes, again according to the rear label. I had some salt and peppery snacks with it. All in all, not bad, but its looks, lack of aroma combined with a fairly dull taste means it hasn’t really been a beer I’ll have again.

Cask at the Windsor Castle brewpub, Lye at 4.3%. Pours gold with a small head. Aroma is buttered biscuits and straw. Taste has some straw malt and biscuit. It’s ok.

Cask at the Windsor Castle brewpub, Lye. Pours deep red with a small head. Aroma is mango and guava juice. Taste has piney hops throughout with a bitter mango finish.

Cask at the Windsor Castle brewpub, Lye. Pours dark ruby brown with a small head. Aroma is woody with slightly sour dark fruits. Taste had mild coffee to start and coffee and dark fruits in the finish. A little thin in the mouth.

Cask (The Rockstone, Southampton) - Dark brown, with a bit of a haze, living up to its name somewhat! Coffee, chocolate and roasted malt in the aroma. Roasted and chocolatey taste with notes of coffee and liquorice detected.

Cask (The Rockstone, Southampton) - Amber in colour. Grapefruit, toffee and pine in the aroma. Hoppy, yet nicely balanced taste with notes of grapefruit, toffee and apricot.
