Description
Hop Back Brewery Ltd was formed in October 1991 by John Gilbert and we moved to a small industrial unit in Downton, just south of Salisbury. After refurbishment and installation, brewing on the new 20 barrel plant started in June 1992.

In 2012 Hop Back celebrated its 25th birthday, having retained John’s original philosophy and passion for beers that he would want to drink.

Cask at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford In previous years I have enjoyed this beer, but this years version left a lot to be desired. Not sure what it was supposed to be, but all I got was some ginger and a bit of spicy hop, and some alcoholic sweetness. Perhaps I just had a bad pint

Cask at White Horse, Dover Had this once before at the Red Lion, Snargate at their summer beer festival and thought that it was a bit bland then. It has a rich deep brown colour but then after that it has some good malt flavours but doesn’t really go anywhere. Not enough structure or balance to make it interesting

(Bottle 50 cl) Black and completely opaque, very limited head. Some underlying malty sweetness but mainly burned flavours from the malts. Rather light body. 010605

Cask. Clear dark copper colour, stable head. Roasted hoppiness (?), caramel aroma, some sewer? Strangely smokey. A little sweetish. Aromatically hoppy aftertaste.

Cask. Clear yellow colour, small white head. Weak, but refreshing citrus aroma. Watery citronvand flavour. OK bitter aftertaste with some astingency. The bitter aftertaste balances the citrus a bit, but not entirely. Thin body. Gets a bit better after an entire pint.

Cask at The Tiger, Stowting, Kent Light golden beer. Hoppy nose, some creamy lemon citrus in mouth with some acids. Good citric finish. Does not taste like a 5% beer. Can be deceptively drinkable on a hot day in a pub garden

Yellow with white head, looks like a pilsener. Refreshing aroma ith lemon (of course), hops and pepper. Dry flavour, quite weak, and also very fresh. If I could get it cheaper it could become a great summer favourite, but when I can get trappists and Fuller ales at similar prices...

Light pale-orange, yellow body, chill haze and a persistent, yet small, white head. Aroma of soft, earthy hops, bit of nuttiness and some easygoing pale malt. Dried fruit in the aroma as well. Flavor is quite unique, bits of graininess, dusty/earthy notes, lots of moss, which I have underlined twice in my notes. Creamy maltiness, lots of citrus. Extremely drinkable. Medium-light body, low wateriness. The people with whom I was talking kept commenting that this wasnt as good as their previous samples with it because it lacked a funky, farmy, nose to it, but not having had this before, I thought it great.

[Cask at Volunteers Arms, GBBF 2004] A yellow beer with a small head. It has no aroma and the flavor is boring malty.
