Description
Averbode Abbey beer is a tribute to history: from the 14th to the early 20th century the abbey was already actively engaged in brewing. For the production of the ‘new’ abbey beer the abbey opted for Brouwerij Huyghe, which also has a rich history of its own.
However, there are also similarities. Respect for the environment and society play a central role in the brewery. Indeed, Brouwerij Huyghe is the only brewery in Belgium to produce the Mongoza-beer that has received the fair trade, gluten free and organic label. It also actively invests in a smaller footprint and social employment.

Clear medium golden colour, tall frothy white head, half-way lasting, fair lacing. Fruity aroma, peach, banana, coriander, light lemon, yeast. Taste light heavy sweet and light to medium bitter, fruity, yeast, spicy notes. Sweetbitter aftertaste with a light sourish note, yeasty, astringent mouthfeel. Medium body, oily texture, average and sharp carbonation, not fully convincing.

Pours clear and golden with a minimal white head. The aroma contains a bit of hops, dough and fruits, but is almost nonexistent. Tastes light sweet and light bitter. The carbonation is too lively. Does nothing in terms of taste. Disappointing.

(Draught at Gollem, Antwerpen, 15 Oct 2015) Pale golden colour with frothy, white head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of citrus, tropical fruit, candy sugar and herbal hops. Malty, fruity taste with tropical fruit, marzipan, a slightly metallic touch and a balanced herbal bitterness. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty, but with the usual slightly sticky Huyghe character. Still, quite nice.

33cl bottle in Brugge (Daisy’s) on 29th Nov 2015. Golden yellow pour with a full white head. Fairly sweet in the nose and initial taste with some fruity notes and a yeasty base that is noticeable in both the aroma and flavour. Mild banana esters hover just below the surface with a vanilla twist mid-sip. Lightly carbonated and a little softness on the palate: decent.
