Description
The brewery Slaghmuylder was founded in 1860 by Emmanuel Slaghmuylder. Around the turn of the century his son Ernest took over the company. He married Marie Van Roy, daughter of a brewer family of Wieze. His three sons opened a new brewery in 1926 which could start immediately with the new brewing process for lager beer. During the war of 1940-1945 brewing restarted for high-fermentation ales. It is only in1958 that the brewery started again with the production of low-fermentation beers. In the mid sixties the three brothers were succeeded by their sons. From 1979 on, the three nephews started brewing the Witkap Pater beers on request of brewery "De Drie Linden" from Brasschaat. In 1981 the Witkap Pater brand was officially taken over by Slaghmuylder. Beginning of theeighties the brewery was equipped with separate fermentation and layering cellars for both high and low fermentation beers. Brewery Slaghmuylder remains a unique family company that builds on a rich tradition.

Recommended by the staff (Shadi) at the Waterhuis, this was a nice brown ale that was hoppier than most. Good choice.

Bottled (as Slaghmuylder Helles Lager Beer, 5.0%). Hazy golden, small head. Cellary butterscotch aroma. Medium sweet and medium bodied with rounede moutfheel. Buttery deep malt with some paper. The malt softness and depth of the malt character gives it many points, but it also feels unclean and dusty/butterscotchy.

Bottle, Belgian Belly, Chorlton, Manchester. Hazy golden colour, with a nice lingering white head. Grassy, fragrant, fruity aroma. Interesting, herby flavour with a nice citrus tang. Hugely drinkable and a little gem.

Bottle, 5.2%. Violent gusher. Bretty aroma, quite sour. Hazy golden colour. Big stable white head. The flavour is quite malty with a distinct sweet brett note. Very high carbonation. Tastes OK, but I wonder if it is supposed to be like this. By no means a pilsener.
