(Cave-aged 2000 version) Clear yellow, orange shine. Thick, stable luxurious white head. Orangey, spicey, but biscuity nose. Serious signs of oxidation. Taste of oxidation too. Malty taste, crystal and pale; citrussy flavour retronasal. Well-bodied. Alcohol very apparent, compared to the very light Hennepin. Yes, this IS better than what I had sofar from Ommegang. But the oxidation is not going to be everybody's choice. Remains to be seen what would be normal ageing, and what is due to the 'cave'...

Ommegang pours out a rich deep goppery brown under thick lasting head. Sweet caramel complexity with a smooth medium body. Very nice domestic Belgian.

Aroma of malt and banana. Light brown and cloudy. Heavily carbonated. Small but thick head. Flavor of malt, and it is a powerful flavor. Also some herbal and acidic flavors. Not simple, but not quite complex. Thick and heavy. Good stuff.

White Labelled 2003 Release (bottle 2):
Ruby tinted amber colour with a super dense tan head. Aroma slightly of cherries, but favouring malt, raisins, plums and alcohol. Medium-bodied; Sweet caster sugar/caramel sweetness. Slight sourness midway through, but not lasting long. Aftertaste bittered from the malt, not left clean. Overall, not pleasing, not a great value, and therefore a pretty big dissapointment! This 75 cL bottle was purchased at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York and sampled on 11-December-2003.

White Labelled 2003 Release (bottle 1):
Ruby-tinted brown coloured body. Slight smokey aroma, malt cherries and metal. Medium to Light-bodied; Spicey malty taste with some cherries. Aftertaste bittered-some peppery and not terribly pleasant. Overall, decent-but less than what I had expected. Quite simply, yet another unsatisfying beer from Ommegang. This one isn't even a great value at $8 a 75 cL bottle. I had this bottle at the Winter Party at Oakes' place in Toronto, Canada on 05-December-2003.

Bottle. A rich dark amber beer with a beige head sitting on top that stays as a coating of lace on the glass. Wonderful to look at. Aroma is fruity and caramelly sweet. Rich complex flavors - honey, caramel, plum, some sort of berry - with a big alcohol warming at the end and lingering toffee/honey.

Original TP - 4.3 - Dark brown with hints of red - very low carbonation - inviting aroma of yeast, plums prunes, brown sugar and alcohol - flavor is a delicious mixture of chocolate, plums, dark cherries and some molassas - silky mouthfeel, lingering malty finish - great beer. New TP (with kriek) - there really isn't much difference between this and the original, besides the slight, tart cherry flavor added by the lambic, which is actually difficult to detect - there's a bit more chocolate in this one, esp. in the finish, and the body appears to be a bit thinner - still a great beer, though.

Dark burgundy colour with a very minimal tan head. Smells of pit fruit, plentiful malt, a hint of metal and sweet caramel are all noticeable in the aroma. Medium-bodied; Carbonated mouthful, weak taste. Flavours in the taste are malt, dark pit fruits, chocolate and a very astringent alcoholic kick. Aftertaste very bittered from the malt and from the chocolate flavours and the alcohol is still noticeable very late on. Overall, a decent beer, but really not as good as everyone makes it out to be (in my own opinion of course). Worth trying, because it is a great deal-sub $4 for a 75 cL bottle! I bought this 75 cL bottle at Wegman's in Pittsford, New York.

2014-04-14, draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver, 7.7% ABV, 6-3-7-3-13=32
Cloudy darker blond color with small compact head. The aroma is delicate, light fruity and spicy presence. Good strength, with high carbonation, then enough smooth; some malt/wheat flavor, spices (but also some anise among them, not a favorite one), a touch of oranges; the bitterness is a bit stronger than other beers in the category, while the moderate sweetness reveals the American origin; in the final there are light traces of vegetables, a real turn off although in small doses.
Good but not as elegant.

2007-12-17, corked bottle, 6-3-6-3-11=29
Hazy golden color. Dry aroma, spicy and with some plastic. Dry flavor too, light saccharin sweetness, a bit of plastic, some citrus fruit, peels. Not so interesting.

2003-07-26, corked bottle, 7.5% ABV, 7-4-7-4-14=36
Golden color; big head. Like a Grand Cru, a wheat character in the aroma and taste. Quite malty.

Hazy brown-amber color. Nice malt aroma. Good body, well structured, quite sweet in the front and correctly balanced later; caramel and liquorice.

Pours a cloudy amber, with lively carbonation and a cream-colored head. Fruit and spicy yeast aroma. Flavor is first and foremost dry, with vinous and fruity characteristics, spiciness, and a bit of apple cider. Tasty.
