Description
It all started in 1986. Sure, many things have changed since the early days of Harpoon, but much has stayed the same. We still love brewing beer and enjoying it with friends.
In July 2014, Harpoon became an employee owned company, with 48% of the company given to employees through the establishment of an ESOP. An E-what? ESOP stands for Employee Stock Ownership Plan. It is a mechanism by which a company contributes to its employees’ retirement by allocating shares to them which it repurchases…..yadda, yadda, yadda… Here’s what it means: we are employee owned, we are an independent craft brewer, and you bet we’re damn proud of it.
In 2024, Harpoon and Smuttynose merged, forming Barrel One Collective.

Very clear copper and bronze coloured body with a very fast-dying off-white head, about two centimetres tall that dies quickly and leaves just about nothing on top. Aroma of very strong maple, slightly artificial with a lot of residual sugars, a good deal of lactose and icing sugar, with a softer malt backbone, some caramelised sugars and a touch of biscuity malts all noticeable - fairly nice, considering what could have been or anything horribly cloying. Medium-bodied; Strong maple flavours show through everything with some milk, creaminess and definite lactose right behind with a dry and fairly malty characteristic right behind with a funky oat and earthy complexity that has a bit of a rustic quality, but mostly sweet at the end. Aftertaste shows the maple flavours with more real than artificial notes and a lot of malts and residual sugars and less of the dryness and grainy qualities that were there earlier. Overall, a surprisingly nice and balanced beer with a pretty good maple kick, but an easy-drinking malt and yeast profile that make this rich, robust and still showing a nice maple flavour without being cloying or short-sided. I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Giant Food in Alexandria (Potomac Yard), Virginia on 08-October-2021 for US$1,99 sampled at my house here in Washington on 14-October-2021, a bit less than a week later.

Dunkin season is back! This one is nice - big maple flavor up front with a pretty typical, albeit sweet blonde finish.
