About
The Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg was established in 1871 by Sigmund von Willibald. The Von Willibalds owned the castle and brewery till 1917 when the premises were acquired by the Schülein family. The Schülein heirs sold the castle and brewery in 1954 to the Wittelsbach family. The König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg continues the 800-year tradition of brewing of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Prince Luitpold of Bavaria started in the 1970s to turn the small brewery in Kaltenberg Castle into a modern company.

The castle still houses part of the brewing installation of the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei. 100,000 hectoliters of beer are brewed here every year. But most activities of the company are located in the large modern brewery in Fürstenfeldbruck. Since 2001 the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg has been a 50/50 joint venture with Warsteiner.

0.5 l can, thanks Stanko. Clear golden, medium white head. Immediate metallic note. Grainy, cooked corn. Becomes better with time, bland grainy flavour. Some herbal notes. Moderate carbonation. Not too sweet. Light body.

Very hazy pale amber colour, a lot of tiny bubbles, mid-sized creamy off-white head, good retention, light lacing. Aroma wheat malt, yeast, banana, cloves, buttery notes. Taste light heavy to medium sweet, wheat malt, banana, yeast, quite spicy (cloves and pepper), light hop touch. Medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation, cloves, sweet aftertaste, bit chalky and peppery notes, perhaps a bit too sweet but very pleasant, very quaffable, good.

From bottle. Light grain, corn grass and citrus notes, a bit metal. Dry bitterness. Very light bodied, watery thin texture, lively carbonated, dry finish. Okay for what it is. Nice bottle label.

Bottle from Beers Of Europe. Pours a clear mahogany colour with a thick throthy beige head. Aromas of dark fruits, berries, caramel, bread, faint roasted malt and nuts. Taste is the same notes with the roasted malt and nuts more pronounced. A slightly hoppy bitterness on the palate at the finish. Light to medium bodied. High carbonation in the glass but not as noticeable on the palate. Smooth mouthfeel. The thick beige head lasts all the way down the glass. Very well conditioned beer. it’s a good dunkel.
