Description
The Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg was established in 1871 by Sigmund von Willibald. The Von Willibalds owned the castle and brewery till 1917 when the premises were acquired by the Schülein family. The Schülein heirs sold the castle and brewery in 1954 to the Wittelsbach family. The König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg continues the 800-year tradition of brewing of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Prince Luitpold of Bavaria started in the 1970s to turn the small brewery in Kaltenberg Castle into a modern company.
The castle still houses part of the brewing installation of the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei. 100,000 hectoliters of beer are brewed here every year. But most activities of the company are located in the large modern brewery in Fürstenfeldbruck. Since 2001 the König Ludwig Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg has been a 50/50 joint venture with Warsteiner.

(bottle) Clear, golden colour with a steady and slightly off-white foamy head. Moderately sweet malty aroma with traces of cara-malt, biscuits and shy notes of herbal hops. Light-bitter flavour, medium to light bodied with a moderate carbonation. Plain (cara-)malty taste with a whiff of biscuits and herbal notes. Bitter-sweet cara-malty finish. Boring Märzen (31.III.09).

Bottle, from trade with Papsoe. It pours a clear, pale golden body with a small, white head. Grainy on the nose with a sweetness resembling fruit syrup. Sweet, fruity and grainy flavor with some bitterness. A touch of pinecones too. Medium body and almost sticky. Sweet, grainy finish with some hops giving a hint of bitterness. Too sweet I think, but certainly drinkable. (090219)

Bottle. It’s a ruby to dark brown beer, no sediments, and a small off-white head. Weak nose of caramel, some roasted malts and a touch of dms. Sweet flavor with some roasted malts and caramel, Some chocolate notes in the back and a litttle bitterness towards the finish. Medium body, nice co2 level. The beer finishes as it started, but with less obvious sweetness. Not much exciting about this one, but easy to drink and without off-flavors. (081206)
