Swedish mead aged on peated whisky barrels – a first for me and I am not normally into mead, but I could not resist this when I saw it offered at Billie’s Craft Beer Fest. No head and none expected of course, hazy honeyish-yellow colour. Aroma indeed very heavily peated, whole bags of it, peated whisky galore, but also fried and candied pineapple, obviously honey, limoncello. Very sweet and sugary in the mouth, deeply honeyish with again that strong pineapple aspect, no carb, full and oily texture, ending sticky sweet with lots of that smoky, peaty whisky aroma returning, but the limoncello element shows up again as well. Some warming, obviously whisky-like alcohol in the end, but not harshly so – in fact I found that sticky sugariness harder to down in this case… Nonetheless an interesting clash of flavours, reminds me a bit of a chili-heated mead I had years ago, also from some northern country. A welcome distraction from all those beers, but one small glass is enough for me.
