Cask at Bird in Hand, Stafford. Pours a golden yellow with a small foamy white head and good lacing. Rather a nondescript aroma – some hints of floral hops. In the mouth it starts off sweet and fruity, with summer ruits and berries. Before long floral hops come through and dominate – plus traces of corn. Finish is slightly dry. This is a decent beer – somewhere between golden ale and a pale ale.

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured almost black with a lasting frothy off-white head. The aroma is roasty malt, yeasty. The flavour is moderate liqourice bitter, with a smooth, roasty, liqourice bitter, light floral hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Tap at Sommar Waterloo Street, Birmingham. Poured a clear almost black colour, with a short-lived, frothy off-white head. The aroma is roasty malt, liqourice. The flavour is moderate liqourice bitter, light sweet, with a big roasty, liqourice, dark chocolate, coffee, light caramel palate and a lingering liqourice bitter sweet finish. Over medium bodied with average to soft carbonation. A superb stout.

Handpull cask from the Kings Head, Leicester. Mid-gold and clear with a small white head. Slightly sweaty aroma with hard citrus peel. Intensely sweet/savoury taste with stone fruit, berry and citrus alongside an almost meaty taste. Long balanced finish. Gorgeous for what it is.

Cask at The Wellington, Birmingham. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a decent beige head on top. Roasty, malty, coffee, berry fruit taste/aroma. Enjoyable easy drinking stout, I had 2 pints.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours a hazy golden yellow with a small white head and good lacing. Some summer fruits in the aroma, but not to any great extent. In the mouth it has a creamy texture, and is sweet and fruity. Flavour has floral hops, apples and berry fruits. There’s a little sticky citrus in the finish. Reasonable enough, but not wildly exciting.
