Description
Epic ales to celebrate legendary Dwarfen deeds! The Fownes Brewing Company was started in 2012 to bring a fresh breed of outstanding ales and porters to the good folk of the Black Country. In the seven years since we rolled the first cask out of the brewery doors we've gone from strength to strength, picking up awards and recognition on a regional and national scale. In the autumn of 2019 we took the bold stride to relocate the brewery deeper into the heart of the Black Country, so that we could forge our next chapter and expand our ability to bring our unique, epic ales to a wider audience than ever before.

Cask at Seven Stars, Stourbridge ( not yet listed in RateBeer) – at 4.6%. Pours a slightly hazy golden amber with a small white head and good lacing. Aroma ? Well that’s a tricky one. Sometimes I got a strong sweetness, other times it was spicy. In the mouth it has a creamy texture. There is a sweetness with hints of honey at first, but this gives way to spicy hops with an undercurrent of malts beneath. Finish is quite dry. This is excellent – hits the spot exactly !

Cask at Olde Royal Oak, Burton on Trent (not yet listed on RateBeer). Pours almost black with a small cream head and good lacing. Malts mixed in with alcoholic strength in the aroma. Roasted malts again in the mouth, where there is a slight sweetness overall. Dark fruits, vanilla and alcohol with a little coffee. Finish is somewhat bitter. A bit of a boozy one all round.

Cask at Hrose & Jockey, Penkridge. Pours a very dark reddish brown with a small cream head. Not much of a nose – just vague hints of lactose and malts. In the mouth it is sweet with a milky texture. Flavour is mainly berry fruits and treacle, but there are also traces of roasted malts and bacon (!). Finish is sweet and malty. Quite nice, but not wildly exciting.

Third of a gravity dispensed pint at the Kidderminster Beer Festival on 6th November 2021. Tight white head on an amber body, didn't detect any pumpkin spices, etc, etc, nor much evidence of smokiness. Liked it though, it was malty and semi-sweet.
