Sample at the brewpub. This beer is a dark brown color with a thin and rocky white head that burns away pretty quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel and candied fruit as well as some malt. Flavors of caramel malt and toffee along with some sweet fruit. The finish is smooth and sweet with a caramel malt aftertaste, along with a touch of hops. Overall this is a unique take on the style, and it is a pretty good beer.

6.5
Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 6 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 7

Sample at the brewpub. This brew pours brownish-black with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. The aroma has a rather smoked character with malt and hops underneath. Medium body with smoked malt, coffee and hops flavors. The finish is strong smoke with some espresso left over. Overall, this beer doesn’t strike a good balance with the smokiness like the best in the style do (as in Alaskan). Still, it was alright.

Sample at the brewpub. This brew is a hazy dark amber-orange color with a minimal white head that burns away to nothing quickly. Spotty lacing. Chili pepper aroma with a sweet malt undertone. Light-bodied and peppery throughout, with a touch of underlying sweetness. The finish is hot peppers. Thanks to Cave Creek I’ll never be able to try a beer like this without some trepidation, but still it was not very enjoyable.
