About
Traquair House is the oldest inhabitat house in Scotland and dates back to 1107 and has been lived in by the Stuart family since 1491. Traquair House Brewery lies in the wing of the house directly underneath the Chapel. It dates back to the early 1700’s and was originally a domestic brewery serving the house and the estate. It was disused in the early 1800’s but never dismantled. It gradually filled with the family junk until it was completely forgotten.

Peter Maxwell Stuart rediscovered the brewery in the early 1960’s and began brewing again as an experiment in 1965 using all the original equipment and fermenting the ales in the original oak tuns, some of which were over 200 years old. In 1990, following Peter’s death, his daughter, Catherine, took over the running of the brewery and it was expanded in 1994. Traquair employs 2 full time brewers and its rich dark ales are now exported all over the world although production remains tiny at only 1,000 hectalites a year.

33cl bottle @Oak Barrel. Poured dark brown with a creamy dense off white head. Plummy, molasses, caramelly aroma. Flavor has caramelized sugar, plums, sherry notes, raisins. Abv nicely hidden, not that sweet either. Balanced, tasty one.

Bottle at The Oak Barrel, HEL. Brown color, small steady beige head. Aroma of raisins, date and barley. Medium-bodied. Sweetish raisiny flavor. Nutty, plummy, fruit cake, tickling alcohol. Quadrupelish. It’s been a while when I had this kind of beer. Super tasty.

Bottled@Kaisla, Helsinki. Very deep ambery black colour, small beige head. Aroma is liquorice, alcohol, nice sweet malts, toffee, and a wee bit of fudge. Flavour is ripe fruits, some toffee, nectar, alcohol, toffee and mild wooden notes. Quite nice already now, but I think this is better as a saver, as it will most likely develop a bit.

Deep but clear chestnut brown colour, one finger frothy tan head, recedes after a while to a thin layer that lasts, minor lacing. Aroma sweet roasted malts, brown sugar, caramel, licorice, raisins, coffee notes. Taste mild sweet and bitter, roasted caramel notes. Full body, creamy texture and mouthfeel, average carbonation. Lingering mild roasty bittersweet finish with toffee and woody undertones. Very well-balanced, I like its creaminess.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - BB Apr 2015, at Gallows Bird, 20150829) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, caramel and chocolate. Palate was rather full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, chocolate, toasted malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. A tasty malty brew but the finish was too harsh.
