Description
Lone Star Brewery, built in 1884, was the first large mechanized brewery in Texas. Adolphus Busch, of Anheuser-Busch, founded it along with a group of San Antonio businessmen.

Originally called the Alamo Brewing Company of San Antonio in 1874, the company was purchased by Anheuser-Busch in 1895 at which time it was housed in the Old Lone Star Brewery.

With the end of Prohibition in 1933, a new brewery under the name Salinas Brewing Company was constructed at 600 Lone Star Boulevard and operated under the Salinas name until 1939. The company then operated under name to the Champion Brewing Company until 1940, at which time it was purchased by the Muchlebach Brewing Company of Kansas City, Missouri. The company re-branded itself as the Lone Star Brewing Company and began officially producing Lone Star Beer that year. The brewery also produced Lone Star Light, low-calorie Lime Lager (1970), and Brut Super Premium (1969).

It was not until 1940 that brewer Peter Kreil from Munich created the formula for the first beer to actually be called Lone Star beer. In 1949, under the leadership of Harry Jersig, Lone Star went public. By 1960, the brewery had 651 employees and by 1965, annual sales exceeded 1 million barrels.

In 1956, the Lone Star Brewery purchased the Buckhorn Saloon & Museum collection. Harry Jersig, President of the brewery and a friend of the Friedrich’s, continued to add to the collection and had a special building erected on the Lone Star grounds to house the collection.

In the 1970s, Lone Star’s sales benefited from Jerry Retzloff, former marketing and promotions manager for Lone Star Beer and his close association with Willie Nelson, the Austin music scene and their Giant Armadillo. The beer is mentioned frequently in the title track of Red Steagall’s 1976 album “Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music”. In 1999, the company began to sponsor Texas singers and musicians, such as Two Tons of Steel, with the beer’s “It’s a Texas Thing” advertising campaign.

Admin Note: Pabst purchased Lone Star Beer in 1999.

Embarrassed to be a Texan and this is my first Lone Star rating. But I do have a bit of an appreciation for Mexican styles. 12 oz can bought yesterday at the nearest HEB. Open the can and take a smell. A little grain and mostly waster from that. Now a drink, cereal, water, a small sweetness and an unusual tang of something, cannot put my finger on it. I squeeze a lime slice and cram it inside, makes it better of course. Tolerable brew at its best.

clear golden colour, one inch of creamy white head, which collapses quite quickly leaving back only some white lacing; aroma and taste is fully dominated by maltiness with some slight marmalade-like fruitiness and only hints of herbal hoppy notes; drinkable, though definitely imbalanced

12 oz. can purchased at Total Wine - The Rim, San Antonio, TX. Pours a hazy light gold color with a white head and fair retention. No lacing. Light peach aroma. Likewise, light peach flavor in a grainy base lager. Semi crisp mouthfeel with a semi flat finish. Light body. Good peach flavor without being too fruity. Simple and enjoyable beer.

12 oz. can purchased at Total Wine - The Rim, San Antonio, TX. Pours a clear dirty gold color with a white head and great retention. Spots of lacing. Slightly sour aroma. Very lightly sweet generic pale malt flavor. Not much of any flavor, but no real off flavors either. Just beer.

Can. A yellow beer with a white head. The aroma has notes of straw and metal. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and metal, leading to a dry finish.

Typical American lager. Not much different than mass market lagers. Crisp and tinny.

Can that pours a clean, very light yellow colour with a whitish cap, average stay and light foam lacing. Sweet malty nose with the corn notes and bad chemical hops. Tastes the same with the smoothness of corn that many people like. Not the grossest, but fairly rich and hard going down. Gonna eat Doritos to go with the corn right now.

Drank straight out of the bottle at the original Rudy's BBQ in San Antonio, TX. Pretty normal light lager flavor. Light body. Not overly carbonated. Easy to drink. Okay cheap lager.
