Description
In 1999 the brewery was established in the ''Commanderie van St. Jan'' in Nijmegen. This 12th century monastery has since been our production location and also the place where beer has been drunk most for years. In Brouwerscafé De Hemel, the 12 taps are always filled with different brewes from Hemel. Beer production takes place in the cellars of the Commanderie.

330ml bottle. Fantastic, mahogany colour with ruby shimmer and average to huge, thick, frothy to creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, off-white to beige head. Sweet-ish, dark malty aroma, notes of malt lozenge, caramel, a touch of toffee, rock sugar, hoppy overtones with a touch of orange blossom, weak, doughy yeasty overtones. Taste is sweet-ish, dark malty and floral-fruity hoppy, hints of malt lozenge, caramel, a touch of toffee, a minimally toasty touch of roasted nuts, some mandarine, orange blossom. Creamy texture, smooth, soft, silky palate, fine and soft, mildly prickly carbonation. Well crafted, well balanced, very clean, quite some subtleties, surprisingly light body - very, very nice.

Mosaic single hop IPA from Nijmegen, tasted under its new name Hopverdorie - the original name Hopverdomme has been abandoned, I assume because Belgian brewery Kerkom already had an IPA of the same name. Very foamy, glass-filling, towering high, egg-white, rocky, irregularly lacing, very stable head on an initially clear, straw blonde beer with golden hue and lively sparkling everywhere; misty with sediment. Aroma - after the nostril-tickling carbon dioxide has faded - of dried grapefruit peel, jute rope, wormwood leaf, spelt bread crust, ground ivy, very faint and volatile background touches of mandarin, peppermint and lavender but some iron as well. Spritzy onset, lots of stinging carbonation, a bit on the harsh side for the style but fine-bubbled enough to remain tolerable, dried apple peel and unripe peach notes but low in sweetness, slick body, light sourish undertone accentuated by the carbonation; cereally pale maltiness, inherently soft but harshened a bit by a light metallic edge - and eventually bittered by confident, leafy, floral and grapefruit pith-like hoppiness, providing some retronasal effects of lemon zest and lavender. This bitterness lasts, filling the back of the mouth, while bready malt and yeast accents pierce through; the sharp minerally effect of (over)carbonation remains till the end as well. I am wondering if iron was used here to increase head retention - surely the size and shape of the head visually point in that direction, but otherwise this is a decent enough 'introductory' IPA, very old school in the sense that emphasis lies on bitterness and 'grapefruitiness' rather than aromatic effects. Nothing memorable if you had a string of West Coast IPAs back in the day like myself, but enjoyable enough, I guess.
