Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Bottle from Beers Of Europe. Clear deep golden body with an off-white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of honey and orange. Flavour of Lockets and peach. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. Overly sweet but an enjoyable IPA.

Bottle from Geers. Hazy orange, thin, off-white head. Aroma of rotting peach, mandarin, apricot, 'dank' & wet straw, old bread, yeast, something solventy, cheesy, sulphuric. Taste has sour wheat, plum, gooseberry, sweetish pear, mandarin & peach but in an overripe way. Bit spicy-yeasty. Ends bitterish with old, wet grassy hoppiness, straw, lingering overripe peach & fruity tannins. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Certainly tastes better than it smells but anyway, not a success.

Oh man. Making me nostalgic of all the Trois Pistoles I drank back in Montreal at uni. Btw, why can’t I find any of those here?

Can from Geers. Hazy golden, small, foamy, white head. Aroma of mandarin, pineapple, grapefruit peel, mango, white pepper, pine, hard cheese (parmezan?), lime. Taste has sweetish mandarin, pineapple & hard peach, quite restrained, increasing bitterness of grapefruit & spices in a bready-yeasty body with a cheesy element returning. Bit zesty into the earthy & piney hoppy finish, grapefruit juice & citrus peel returning. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Good, clean IPA, not remarkable per se but certainly not boring.

Smooth and a bit of bananas. But patersbier is still far from my favorite style. Not much going on for flavor.
