Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Black with quick fading head. Aroma and flavour have plenty of roasted malts and a little cocoa. Fairly sweet up front but the the bitterness grows in the aftertaste.

Bottled 355ml. -from Magic Beer Room Zagreb. Pale golden coloured, medium sized white head, mild yeasty nose. Moderate malty, light herbal hoppy, yeasty and a bit phenolic with touch of spices and soft herbs in the finish. Nothing special here.

Bottled 355ml. -from Magic Beer Room Zagreb. Golden coloured, small white to off-white head, mild caramel sweetness in the nose. Sweet malty, caramel, bit perfumed fruity hoppy notes, some alcohol and rather dry bitterish finish. Interesting, not bad, but not the freshest one I presume.

Bottle from Albert Heijn. Poured a murky straw colour with a frothy white head. The aroma is malt, tropical fruits, mango, melon, light grassy hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a crisp, fresh, fruity, woody, light peppermint hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Lots of flavour and really hit the spot on a sunny day.

Taster pour at Craft Brew Race New Haven. Appearance is opaque black with a small ring of light brown head with minimal lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, fruit. Taste is very sweet dark fruit, rich roasty, chocolatey second half. Palate is medium-to-full bodied with thick texture, soft carbonation and rich roasted, malty, chocolatey finish. Very rich. Overall, not the greatest beer to have in the midst of many others at a beer festival. But, this would be a great dessert beer at home in fall/winter.
