Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Thick, bit irregular rusty-beige head over jet-black beer. Rich chocolatey nose, bit of wood, liquorice, sweet-ish and quite roasted, meatcrust, tad mineral. Roasted-bitterish, but also sweeter chocolate malts, good balance. Hint from an aromatic weed, cypress. Finish is quite dry. Rich, velvety, yet well-carbonated. Very slick, obviously. AH! The first Spencer I can really live with, finally something which can carry the ’Trappist’ moniker with pride.

(Bottle, 0.33 l, from Alko Arkadia, 20160930) The beer poured deep golden and hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had fruitiness, Belgian style yeast and malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, Belgian style yeast, grass, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was sweet, yeasty and bitter. Not a bad Belgian style brew but the finish is out of the character.

Bottle shared by Willrunforb beer, cheers!! Darker Amber color liquid with thin head in a chalice. Aroma is English toffee, toasted grain and the slightest note of smoke.

Pretty much a classic Marzen style with the addition of a mild smoke note. I feel like the used the slightest bit of smoked malt in the process. Medium in body with a mild campfire finish.

75cl bottle from Chez Sophie, shared @ MTG II tasting, at Rich’s Welfare Pad. Pours a deep, hazed reddish mahogany with good tan head. Aroma is Christmas spice. Taste is full-bodied malts with a high carbonation and well-integrated Christmas spices and a nice moreish sweet character. Didn’t expect to like this but like it I did.

Bright clear gold beer, tidy bubbly pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth with modest fine carbonation. Sweetish smooth malts. Modest dried fruits. Light floralness. A little bitterness on the finish. Nice enough but I wanted a much bigger hop kick than I got.

Bottle. Pours hazy dark straw with stable off-white head. Clear aroma of malt and fruit, wit notes of hops and flowers. Sweetish flavour of malt and fruit and yeast, with bitter, hoppy notes and floral touches. Hoppy and citric aftertaste. Rich body. Decent.

Bottle, 6.5%. Yeasty and spicy aroma. Freshly baked bread, cloves. Hazy dark golden colour. Big stable creamy white head. The flavour is a lot like the aroma. Yeasty and spicy with a mild sweetness and a good alcohol level to balance. Seems a bit stronger than 6.5%, I think. A really good clove note, distinct yet mild. Reminds me of the first times I had Trappists.
