Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Bottle. Archer Road Beer Stop, Sheffield. Hazy, gingery amber. Film of sticky, off white head. Nose has spicy malts. Esters and sweet yeast. Lots of that mashed up banana thing. Taste has some spicy, fruity sweetness. More sweet yeast. Foamy mouthfeel. Touch of welcome dryness on the close. Not for me.

Cloudy dark golden, white froth. Peach and pine aroma. Fruity with light caramel. Flavour has caramel and piney hops, some grapefruit notes. Rather sweet. Has a chewy, somewhat DIPA-ish feel to it. Not bad.

28th July 2016: shared bottle at a ’tutored tasting’ in Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Best beer of the evening for me. Decent Imp Stout, black with a tanned head, plenty of chocolate and coffee flavours about, slight vanilla hint in the taste also. Nice malty brew all round.

Bottle kind courtesy of Zlotta at THT. Cloudy chestnut. Toasted caramel malts. Flowery, fennel, verveine, thyme, cinnamon, star anise, loads of herbs, toffee, milky. Medium sweet, mild bitter. Over medium body, soft carbonation. Milky texture, strong aromatic, enjoying this! --- Beer merged from original tick of Trappist Holiday Ale on 18 Dec 2017 at 12:36 - Score: 7. Sampled from 0.75 l bottle from ’finestbelgianbeers.com’, shared at Not THT. Hazy, dark reddish brown with an off-white head. Sweetish-malty, yeasty, a bit fruity and very spicy aroma of caramel, brown sugar, licorice root and cinnamon. Quite sweet, malty, yeasty and quite spicy taste of caramel, brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, licorice root and some clove, followed by a medium long, slightly bitter, rather spicy finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Quite nice, but a bit too spicy to be really enjoyable.

Bottle shared thanks to zlota. Hazy amber with big beige head. Massive cloves and Christmas spices and massive soap on the nose. Caramel, loads of perfume and soap, potpourri, some brown sugar and fudge, brown bread. Medium sweet and bitter. Medium bodied. Extremely aromatic, like the essential oils my mother uses everywhere. It’s not bad, but a bit overdone.
