Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

Bottle from LDW, Eke. Light hazy orange colour, white foam disappears quickly. Sweet banana, citrussy. Light bitter hoppy finish. Very Belgian profile. Ok, nothing spectacular.

355ml bottle @ Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours a misty amber, thin off-white head. Aroma is resinous caramel. Taste is extremely rich crystal malts, caramel, resin with a sharp bitter pine finish. A bit overly sweet & rich. Not particularly enjoyable unfortunately.

33 cl bottle @ hotel room. A total gusher. Aroma has somewhat ripe fruits and apricot. Also mild spiciness. Flavour has apricot, yeasty notes and ripe fruits. Smooth and easy-going, I like the strong ripe fruit and apricot tones here. Could not tell that this was non-Belgian.

SAMPLE at a tasting. Clear golden-amber with sediment, tan head. Juicy ”Belgian” pale fruits in the nose, a touch of clove and alcoholic spice. Pretty robust hop bitterness for the style. Very nice.

Bottle 330ml @Le Trappist, Caen
Hazy brown-orange color, big cloudy off-white head. Perfumic, a bit hayish and sweet yeasty aroma. Medium-bodied. Malty, semi-sweet fruityness, some hayish notes. Finish is quite dry. Not as interesting than its Belgian friends.

750 ml bottle. Ok, when the hell did Trappist monks start brewing Imperial stouts? Load of crap right there. Appearance is deep black with fast dying head. Carbonation seems a tad high. Aroma is day old coffee, decent dark fruits (prunes, raisin) and a good amount of Belgian yeast tones.

Flavor is respectable. Light roasted grain, again coffee that tastes old. Sugar and a slightly bitter chocolate finish. The body leans on the thinner side of the style with a higher carbonation that I found in the fizzy pour. The alcohol is well hidden Overall it’s a hair above average.
