Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

35,5cl bottle from Sip, Tallinn. Pours more or less completely clear deep golden with a decent white head. Trappist IPA? Can’t really see why that was necessary, but to curious to stay away from it. Fairly hoppy aroma with some fruity notes, pine, caramel and malt. Medium sweet with medium flavour intensity and and bitterness. Balanced and easy to drink, doesn’t stand out in any way.

Gusher. Big offwhite head. Hazy orangey body. Fruity mealy over-ripe banana aroma with papery notes. Fruity mealy taste, again with over-ripe banana. Mealy, oily mouthfeel. Fullish body. Dirty earthy taste with fruit notes. This is gross. Not sure what’s happened, but no way am I drinking this. (0.33l bottle, from Fish & Beer, Copenhagen.)

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Greg & Jane’s Beer and Wine. Aroma is bread and caramel malt base with fruity hops, yeast, earth, light pine. Appearance is thick haze, slight orangey yellow, minimal sparkle with finger-width foamy white head with fair retention and decent lacing. Taste is mix of malt, sweet fruity hops, yeast and alcohol--either not altogether finished or just not working so well together. Palate is medium bodied with sticky texture, average to soft carbonation and harsh finish. Overall, aroma started fairly intriguing but the elements didn’t come together right.

0.355 l bottle from ’finestbelgianbeers.com’, best before September 2016. Clear, pale golden amber with a thin, frothy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, fruity-herbal and dank aroma of mango, orange, honey, ginger, leaves and pine. Sweetish-malty, fruity-herbal and dank taste of mango, orange, honey, ginger, leaves and pine, followed by medium long, medium bitter, resiny-herbal finish. Medium to full body, oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Sweet, quite malty, rather unusual hop flavours, but overall very interesting and pleasant. Maybe not the best IPA of all times, but surely not the worst as well.

Shared 12 oz. bottle. A gusher of a bottle. Pour is cloudy gold with a lot of suspended particles. White head. Aroma of honey, malt, yeast, spice, and fruits. Taste is similar to nose. Maybe has a bit of clove and faint banana notes as well. A bit disappointing; had higher hopes for this.
