Description
Early in the 21st century, a vision was born. A dream to unite the land of brews, bring harmony to all who pledged their strength… and make some damn good beer. They who had the vision started the journey and thus began the story… nay… the legend of Bombastic Brewing.
Bombastic Brewing began in 2016. Inspired by the scale of Sierra Nevada, the “gypsy” model of Mikkeller, the business model of early Sam Adams, and the opportunity to make a positive impact in the world through craft beer, Russell Mann sold his retail beer business and set out to create an interesting craft brewery, built in a different model: Partner Brewing.
He took on two co-founders, and being thwarted from Partner Brewing by Johnny Law, Bombastic pivoted and started brewing on a 30, then 50 gallon system in a garage-style facility by the airport. Bombastic would roll open the big garage doors every Saturday to welcome the brave craft beer enthusiasts who showed up and had a great time, buying out every release.

Bomber from the brewery. Aroma is dark bread, raisin, chocolate, coffee, cinnamon. Pours black with a thin beige head that falls pretty quickly into a ring. Taste has a fairly high level of heat and it lingers long after the swallow. No puny hints of subtlety here, despite what the label says. I like that, though. I'd rather have lots of heat than mere hints of it. Perfect mouthfeel with the right amount of carbonation. This is the best Sleuth yet.

Bomber from the brewery. Aroma is blueberry, chalky candy, vanilla, a light breadiness that makes it smell a bit like a blueberry muffin. Pours a murky rust-colored hue with a one finger white head with a purple tint. Taste has a moderate bitterness, some light sweetness and light tartness from the fruit. Flavors of blueberry, citrusy hops, vanilla. Tasty.

Bomber from the brewery. Aroma is light roast, dark bread, dark fruit, dusty old books, wort. Beautiful looking beer--pours black with a two finger tan head with excellent retention and sheets of lace. Taste is moderately bitter with no sweetness. Has a light acidity and tartness. Finishes dry with a lingering bitterness. Very foamy and highly carbonated. Not bad.

Bomber from the brewery. Aroma is nutty, chocolate, coconut, earthy. Pours black with a thin tan head that disappears in a crackling cacophony within thirty seconds. Taste is dry with hints of sweetness with flavors of coconut, chocolate, earth, nuts, licorice, leather, wood. Highly carbonated. Not bad, but I would've liked a more velvety mouthfeel with tight, compact carbonation. Really nice aroma and pretty good flavors, though.

Bomber from the brewery. Aroma is caramel malt, grain, a bit worty. Pours slightly hazy new penny copper with a one finger bone white head with good retention, leaving some lace. Taste is moderately bitter backed by a strong caramel malt sweetness. Has faint citrusy and piney hop edges, but this IPA is all about the malt. Very much a backward thinking brew, harking back to the 90s and early 2000s when double IPAs were still a brand new thing and only a handful of west coast breweries were putting them out. Admittedly, the malt bill is quite tasty, but I prefer what IPAs evolved into after that interesting time in craft beer history, when it became all about the hops and malt would become more of a background nuance, not the star of the show.

Original 2017 rating. Bomber from the brewery. Aroma is nutty and caramelly like good cashew brittle; it's a bit fudgy, some raisin. Pours dark dark brown with a thin collar of beige foam. Taste is sweet, never cloying, finishing with a light bitterness; flavor notes of the aroma, along with a significant black licorice character and a light earthiness. The high ABV is hidden extremely well. Low carbonation, oily mouthfeel. Very tasty drink here, but it would be absolutely awesome with a little more carbonation. 8,3,8,3,17=3.9
10/12/24 rating. 16 oz contract brewed can. Aroma is smoky, dried dark fruit, caramel. Pours dark brown with a thin bone-white head that falls into a ring fairly quickly. Taste is sweet, smoky, and slightly spicy. Like a strong Rauchbier, although the ABV is fairly well masked. 8,4,8,4,18=4.2

Bomber from the brewery. Aroma is mango, grain. Pours hazy golden with a thin collar of big-bubbly foam. Taste is lightly sweet and lightly tart with flavors of mango, grain; finishes fairly dry. Hides its ABV well. Tastes like it could be around 5%. Not bad.

Growler fill from the brewery. Aroma has notes of coffee, dark bread, dark fruit, spices (cinnamon?), tobacco/leather. Pours a dark muddy brown with a thin collar of big-bubbly foam. Taste is lightly acidic, very lightly bitter, a very faint sense of sweet malt in the background, a touch herbal, light basement character, with other flavors matching the aroma. Carbonation is low, but it might be a growler issue. Very interesting stuff. Other than Hair of the Dog Adam, probably the only example I've tried of this rare style. Not bad. Can't wait to try the full strength Business.

Bomber from the release party. Aroma notes consist of coffee, chocolate, licorice, earth, fleeting faint green pepper that disappears almost as soon as it's noticed, dark bread crust. Pours motor oil black with no head; has a nearly nonexistent thin beige collar of foam. Taste is mildly sweet, finishing with a mid-level bitterness. Flavors include coffee, chocolate, maple syrup, licorice. Lightly carbonated with an oily mouthfeel. Like their barleywine, it seems undercarbonated. While not exactly common, and disregarding nitrogenated beers, there are a few lightly carbonated beers like this out in the trade. Maybe that's what they're going for. I personally prefer more carbonation in my beer. Likewise, when a beer has a nice long sustaining head that laces the glass, I tend to have higher hopes for that beer. With more carbonation and a better appearance, this beer would have gotten a really high score, because the aroma and flavors are really nice. Others who don't give a shit about carbonation or appearance will definitely want to seek this out.
