Established in 2016
Bombastic Brewing began in 2016. Inspired by the scale of Sierra Nevada, the “gypsy” model of Mikkeller, the business model of early Sam Adams, and the opportunity to make a positive impact in the world through craft beer, Russell Mann sold his retail beer business and set out to create an interesting craft brewery, built in a different model: Partner Brewing.
He took on two co-founders, and being thwarted from Partner Brewing by Johnny Law, Bombastic pivoted and started brewing on a 30, then 50 gallon system in a garage-style facility by the airport. Bombastic would roll open the big garage doors every Saturday to welcome the brave craft beer enthusiasts who showed up and had a great time, buying out every release.

Growler fill from the brewery. Aroma has notes of coffee, dark bread, dark fruit, spices (cinnamon?), tobacco/leather. Pours a dark muddy brown with a thin collar of big-bubbly foam. Taste is lightly acidic, very lightly bitter, a very faint sense of sweet malt in the background, a touch herbal, light basement character, with other flavors matching the aroma. Carbonation is low, but it might be a growler issue. Very interesting stuff. Other than Hair of the Dog Adam, probably the only example I've tried of this rare style. Not bad. Can't wait to try the full strength Business.

Bomber from the release party. Aroma notes consist of coffee, chocolate, licorice, earth, fleeting faint green pepper that disappears almost as soon as it's noticed, dark bread crust. Pours motor oil black with no head; has a nearly nonexistent thin beige collar of foam. Taste is mildly sweet, finishing with a mid-level bitterness. Flavors include coffee, chocolate, maple syrup, licorice. Lightly carbonated with an oily mouthfeel. Like their barleywine, it seems undercarbonated. While not exactly common, and disregarding nitrogenated beers, there are a few lightly carbonated beers like this out in the trade. Maybe that's what they're going for. I personally prefer more carbonation in my beer. Likewise, when a beer has a nice long sustaining head that laces the glass, I tend to have higher hopes for that beer. With more carbonation and a better appearance, this beer would have gotten a really high score, because the aroma and flavors are really nice. Others who don't give a shit about carbonation or appearance will definitely want to seek this out.

Bomber from the brewery. Aroma is caramel, grain, cola. Pours murky brown-orange with no head; looks completely flat. Taste is sweet with a mild bitterness in the finish. Flavors of caramel, toast, herbal hops, licorice, alcohol. I could use a bit more carbonation. Nice flavors here, though. If it looked better and had more carbonation, this would be awesome. Not bad, though.

On tap. Pours murky orange with a one finger cream colored head with good retention; laces a bit. Taste is dry with a bitter edge and a hint of tartness, much like the plum version. Flavors of orange, mild yeast influence. Aroma is orange, grain. Perfect mouthfeel. Not bad.

On tap at the Great Northern BBQ Fest. Pours extremely hazy orange brown with an off-white head with decent retention and some lace. Aroma is grainy, citrus peel, tropical fruit, seedy berries. Taste is mildly bitter and dry, lots of juicy tropical fruit. Relatively low carbonation. Good take on the NE style. 7,3,7,3,16=3.6
Three years later: 16 oz can from the brewery. Aroma is cantaloupe, dark berries. Pours murky yellow-orange with a one finger bone-white head that collapses into a ring pretty quickly. Taste has a light to moderate pithy bitterness and just enough juicy sweetness; has a nice peppery quality. Perfect creamy mouthfeel. These guys have gotten better with their craft. This seems so much better than the version I had three years ago. 7,4,7,5,17=4.0

On tap at the Great Northern BBQ Fest. Pours black with beige head, good retention. Aroma is ashy, black coffee, raw malt. Taste is light to medium bitter with a good amount of sweetness from the honey. The honey comes through quite strong, also flavors of licorice, chocolate. Pretty tasty.

6/16/17. On tap at Enoteca for the release party. Pours inky black with a thin collar of foam. Aroma is cinnamon, tobacco/leather, licorice, vanilla, raisin. Tastes sweet, savory, lightly bitter, with flavors matching the aroma; a bit boozy, but not over the top. Slightly thin maybe, a bit oily, carbonation is pretty low. Great flavors and a nice aroma here, but would be better a little fuller with a bit more carbonation.
