Description
Yorkshire’s Oldest Brewery. Samuel Smith brews a wide range of high quality beers, solely from authentic natural ingredients. The brewery still uses stone Yorkshire squares to ferment all its ales and stouts (except Sovereign and Extra Stout) and the same yeast strain has been used since the 1800s. Whole dried English hop varieties such as Fuggles and Goldings are used to add bitterness and aroma to Samuel Smith’s traditional ales in the antique boiling coppers. Samuel Smith’s uses oak casks for all its naturally conditioned ale. The casks are made and repaired at the Old Brewery by the brewery’s two full time coopers.

473mL can. Pours black with beige head. Damp roasted malts and a touch of liquorice on the nose. Flavour has roasted malts, coffee, and some black liquorice; a bit watered down. Finish is nice and dry. Moderate body. Initial impression was fairly mild, but more complexity coming up as it warms. Nice oatmeal stout.

355ml bottle from Beers of Europe, online. Pours a clear light amber, with small white head. Aroma of fruity apricot jam, dried apricots, malt base is somewhat grainy and basic but not unpleasant. Taste has a wow factor in being so fruity with the apricot flavour coming through amazingly well. It doesn't taste artificial although there is a syrupiness to the mouthfeel which may be the concentrate that was used. Its sweet but not overbearing. Grains and hops are notable in the taste but are heavily in the background which is not necessarily a good thing if its supposed to be a beer but when it tastes this good you cant moan too much.

550ml bottle from Beers of Europe, online. Pours a clear amber with small off-white head, nice retention. Aroma is malty with notes of caramel, pear and toffee. Taste starts malty with caramel and toffee notes but then there is a nice fruity tang with a zesty bitter bite in the finish. Beginning, middle and end of this beer from a flavour perspective is well crafted Medium bodied, fairly smooth. Very good bitter.

Bottle from Connolly's Wine Merchants, online. Pours a clear red--brown colour with small creamy looking off-white head, nice retention. Aroma and taste of cherries and marzipan which dominate everything, sweet and tart, some wheat, peppery finish. Syrupy mouthfeel. I enjoyed the fruitiness of it a lot but it is so adjunct heavy it could almost be mistaken for a flavoured cider.
