Yorkshire’s Oldest Brewery. Samuel Smith brews a wide range of high quality beers, solely from authentic natural ingredients. The brewery still uses stone Yorkshire squares to ferment all its ales and stouts (except Sovereign and Extra Stout) and the same yeast strain has been used since the 1800s. Whole dried English hop varieties such as Fuggles and Goldings are used to add bitterness and aroma to Samuel Smith’s traditional ales in the antique boiling coppers. Samuel Smith’s uses oak casks for all its naturally conditioned ale. The casks are made and repaired at the Old Brewery by the brewery’s two full time coopers.

Very thick head produced when the beer is poured. The beer is a very smooth drink, with a cocoa and malty aroma, and a coffee and bitter flavour. The beer is only let down by a slightly sweet tang after the beer is swallowed. A great beer nonetheless.

For once a lighter Sam Smith beer that was not lightstruck! Still a thorughly average beer though. Pours a golden color with a thin white head and a little carbonation and thin lacing. Earthy, fruity and yeasty aroma. On this thin side and lacking in any obvious flavor. Unbalanced but drinkable, still I''ll go back to the Imperial Stout next time.

Bottled. Reddish amber with rich head. Flower aroma. Malty, dry and really hoppy. It also has that unmistakable Samuel Smith house character that I've loved since I first learned about British ales.

Attractive bright amber; aroma of caramelly malts and the chalky yeastiness of Yorkshire squares. Similar profile with more caramel, tobacco, wood - almost a dusty attic character. It is this that, when skunked, turns into the astringent, ashy character I've had problems with in the past.

Pale amber, large foamy head, good retention. Fruity aroma: pear oranges and banana. Strong fruity flavor with distinct herbal and floral hop flavors. Medium bitter finish. Excellent balance. A bit of an acidic harshness develops as it warms.
