Golden coloured. Medium bodied, with some discrete complexity. Low bitterness. By far my least favourite of Samuel Smith's beers.

Dark amber ale. Very nice hop aroma, and some malt. Not outstanding, just an evident bitterness and some hop aroma in the (quite long) final.

Dark ale. Malt aroma, alcohol, roasted malt. Not enough body for a porter, strong roasted malt character, hint of liquorice. Final dominated by the roasted malt bitterness and a residual sourness.

Re-rate from bottle. Black, low offwhite cream. Roasted grain, plums, metallic notes, licorice. Medium light body, mellow mouthfeel. Dry chocolate, licorice, fennel, medicinal notes, iodine, necrotic. Dry medium light failing body. Skunky :( Aroma is skunky with a little bit of malt. Flavor is still skunky with some underlying layers of roasted malt. Seems like there might be a good porter in there somewhere. Perhaps a bit thin though, and there's a sourness that I'm not sure is related to the skunkiness. Very dark brown with a medium head and fair lacing. Finish is dry and bitter.

Very dark brown colour. Aroma is chocolatey, slightly vinous with vague hints of coffee and apple juice. Fairly robust flavour profile - not in terms of bitterness, just palate impact - features plums, vinous notes, hints of roast and chocolate. Tangy and malty with a chewy, fruitcakey finish. No one element dominates, and the vinous notes not only hint at traditional porter but also add an element that most porters lack. I also appreciate that this is a proper porter, not a stout in masquerade. A total package porter, one of maybe the top dozen or so in the world.
