Can from a Carrefour supermarket in Leuven. Nice and modern can. A new lager from a small brewery that makes good beers, so I had quiet high expectations. But this is an awful sweet malty boring lager. Why oh why is it so difficult for Belgian brewers to make a good lager! A pity, because the other beers from Lupus are good.

Nice Belgian dark beer. Yeasty body, with tasty notes of pear and some other fruits. Good one.

Bottle at home, cheers Nick! Pours hazy pale golden yellow, big white head. Aromas of citrus, yeast, light banana esters. Good bitterness on the taste, with a creamy texture and clean finish. Nice.

3oz pour at Max’s Belgian Fest 2014. Pours a hazy gold with some thin, lacing white head. Nose is yeasty, sweet, lemon, grassy. Flavor is sweet, malty, candy, grass, a little vitamin C tablet, chalky tums. Spritzy finish. OK.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a fast-dying slight head of tan. Aroma of roasted malt, alcohol, coffee, nuts, earth and some subdued vanilla. Medium-bodied; Assertive yeast and funk up front with a lot of earth, nuts, caramel and raisins noticeable. Aftertaste shows a relatively sweet flavour, but some deeper malt and figs coming through, all with a little nuttiness and a light cherry finish. Overall, a decent beer, but a bit mixed up in the style - i’m not sure what this is supposed to be, but i’d characterise it as an old ale or a traditional belgian ale. Great to sample, but not really worth bringing it back across the atlantic with all of the other options. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Beer Mania in Bruxelles, Belgium on 19-August-2013 for €2,25 sampled at home in Washington on 01-February-2014.

33cl Bottle, from Hopduvel or ABS Winksele. Clear ruby to brown colour, offwhite head. Aroma of confit fruits, red fruits, banana esters, malts, alcohol. Flavour is sweet, malty, dried red fruits, esters, banana, alcohol, hint of spice, warming alcohol bitter finish. Medium-bodied, tasty beer IMHO.

330ml bottle. Clear, ruby red glowing, dark brown colour with huge, thick, foamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Nuttily dark malty aroma, fruity overtones of red berries. Taste is initially minimally tart fruity, notes of red berries, slightly spicy yeasty overtones, a dry touch of fruit parings in the middle part, subtle sweetness with a chocolately touch close to the finish; controlled lively carbonation.
