Bottled shared at home - Cheers Steven! Pours a lovely pale amber with white head. Some butter on the nose which seems characteristic of Luckie’s ales. Floral notes, good bitterness and finish. Slightly sherbety, but all in all a good pale ale.

Bottle from BeerHive, Edinburgh [180213]
Black, rich tan head, some lacing
Aroma of rich dark smooth malts with a dab of yeast
Taste of roasted malts, fruity dark malts, dab of yeast, touch of dark toffee, some chocolate, good flavour
Palate - Medium carb and body, creamy rich malts, Finish as main flavour, smooth rich dark chocolatey malts, bit of a dry roast finish, touch of a salty edge though that loses it some marks
Overall - Lot of flavour here - it’s a good porter

Perhaps it was just the fact that this was the only beer on at the Hanging Bat the night I was in that wasn’t hopped to high heaven, but this was exceptional. Bettered only by the same brewery’s 56 shilling. A beauty.

Bottle from BeerHive, Edinburgh [080213]
Dull orange amber, very hazy, big frothy white head, slight lacing.
Aroma of soft orange citrus, some yeast, touch of wet hay and some spicy hop, bit of apricot.
Taste of soft mellow fruits, dull orange, soft apricot, dab of damp hay, light sweet fruity malts with some spicy bit peppery hop. Can certainly taste the Stryian Goldings as Timmy Taylor Landlord uses the same hop - there is a bit of the taste of Landlord in this.
Palate - Soft carb, light to medium body, soft mouthfeel, light sweet palate. Finish as main flavour with a bit dry, light bitter spicy tail
Overall - Didn’t expect it to taste as it did - not your usual pale ale. Tastes rather better than the aroma. I like beers that do things different from the norm.

Cask @ Hanging Bat, Edinburgh [070213]
Caramel orange brown, hazy, thin white head with a touch of lacing
Aroma of caramel, soft smooth toffee malts, good nose
Taste of caramel malts, smooth fruity toffee, soft bitter hop, some raisin fruits, very mellow and smooth, alcohol very well hidden, super mellow flavour, great balance
Palate - Medium body, quiet oily, smooth caramel toffee on palate. Finish as main flavour with some toasted malt coming through
Overall - This was just so mellow, alcohol very well hidden, smooth, well balanced, very well made. One of the best strong ’brown’ bitters I’ve had - it comes to prove brown bitters can be done well.
