Description
In May 1867, the Leinenkugel family brewery was founded in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin by Jacob Leinenkugel. He was a family man driven by an iron work ethic, and he knew that his German family heritage would play an integral part of his brewery’s success. Today, the sixth generation of Leinenkugels continues to brew some of the same family-inspired recipes that Jacob poured his heart and soul into. Over the years, our family has grown and so has our brewery, but our history and heritage remain at the forefront.

I have an appreciation for the style although it is nowhere near top-level. Generally the beers are all right, just not very challenging. This evening I have a 12 oz bottle of Toasted Bock that was obtained at the neighborhood HEB supermarket. There is my New Belgium globe glass out for the sampling and I tilt the bottle for the pour. I see a dark chocolate brown liquid with amber highlights showing with a backlight and a momentary head of light taupe foam. The scent is grain and something roasty. The drink is a nice surprise, a little more working here than I expected. A nutty flavor, toasted bread, field and just the barest bit of toffee sweetness. Not as thin as others. One of the better bocks I have sampled.

Aww hell this one fails to deliver. Promising start, a nice reddish brown color with modest head. Nose has a nice caramelized thing going on, but the sweet melanoidiny malt expected on the tongue is just barely there. Finishes with an earthy mild bitterness, I feel like I'm steeling from puboflyons below with that comment, but its really there. But there's just no depth, a tad thin in the body. Not that I'm expecting a big heavy complex beer here (I don't even want that), but its still just not where it needs to be.

Pour is a dark brown with a foamy tan head. Aroma is a pretty decent hit of cocoa powder. Flavor is flavor is more cocoa powder. Not much of a dunkel with this, it is full on about the chocolate. Decent beer and full of chocolate flavor I just don't know if I would ever want more the one of these.

Very dark brown with a large foamy tan head that lingered and left good lacing. Sweetish and toasty with malt and cocoa notes. Long finish. Medium body.

Sample at Mariano's, Westmont. Oh yes, a big chocolate and caramel nose, even in this tiny glass. Looks deceptively like a light porter, with a thin ring of fine foam. A song chocolate cake taste, even chocolate frosting. Fidget background, very little bitterness. As the barkeep said, it's a beer you'd have once at dessert, then move on to the next one.
