Description
Set in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia, Blue Mountain opened in 2007 as the region’s first rural brewery. Founders Taylor and Mandi Smack and Matt Nucci had a vision to bring the brewery experience out of the normal hustle and bustle of an urban environment. Today, we’re still focused on making an inspired range of the highest-quality beers that can be enjoyed at our two locations in beautiful Nelson County, or in bottles and cans throughout Virginia and beyond.

4 oz pour on draft at Spacebar. Poured a clear golden yellow color with a small off-white head. There's some light floral notes here. Juicy hops, light citrus. Really nice. Touch of melon in there. Tasty.

Limited edition of Blue Mountain's standard 'impy', aged on bourbon barrels for one year. Bomber generously shared by Morgan and Lauren, huge thanks for this one guys! Membranously, tightly lacing, deep beige, stable, creamy head over a jet black beer. Absolutely spot-on aroma of everything you can expect from an excellent BBA stout: chocolate liqueur, sweet bourbon, hot chocolate sauce on a dame blanche, vanilla-scented oak wood, toffee, chestnuts, hazelnut paste, cinnamon, pipe tobacco, leather, black pepper, candied figs, whisky, bayleaf. Rich, full onset, candied dates, fig compote and blackberry jam, dense and perfectly balanced by a soft underlying sourishness and a thin rim of meaty umami; soft carbo, very thick, oily and viscous mouthfeel, the way it ought to be in this style. Thick toffeeish and nutty malt body, layers of caramel and black bitter chocolate, toasted bread and eventually cold black coffee, but sweetness remains more dominant, especially when the bourbon comes in at the end, paired with drying, lively oaky wood tannins, expressively vanilla-ish; peppery hop sting at the end. The alcohol provides a wonderful afterglow but, and this is not nearly always the case in much more famous barrel aged American stouts, remains perfectly in place, without any sign of unpleasant wryness and without penetrating the beautiful malt body and rustic woodiness. I had a fair share of both legendary barrel aged American impies and a whole string of lesser gods from both sides of the Atlantic so I think I recognize a world class stout when I encounter one - and this is a near to perfect execution of this theme. Absolutely world class, way above the regular version, which is already excellent. Never saw this blast coming when I went to my local pub in Ghent to have a casual drink...

12 ounce bottle. Hazy yellow-amber, extremely fine particulate matter, viscous looking. Thin fizzy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of grapefruit, yuzu, pale malt, hints of yeast. The taste is lemon, grapefruit, pale malt, a bit of nuttiness. Medium bodied, crisp, moderate lingering bitterness. A bit lacking in the "Belgo" department.
