Description
The Black Country Ales Brewery has been established through a genuine love of traditional ales. We brew our outstanding selection of beers using only the finest ingredients to the highest possible standards. Brewing started on the site around 1834 by Edward Guest, taken over by the Bradleys in 1870, and moth balled after WWII. Much of the original equipment is still in use, and we’re very proud to still be holding on to our connection to the brewers of yesterday.
When we bought The Old Bull’s Head pub in 1999 it came with a boarded up brick building at the rear that was referred to by the estate agents as “a two storey outhouse”. Imagine our amazement after the purchase when we finally entered the building to find three magnificent wooden fermenting vessels and other brewing equipment going back years. We love running pubs but there had never been any plan to brew our own beer until this great find. It took a few years to set up and we have had a lot of mistakes to learn from too but in 2004 beer started flowing again from the Gornal brewery.

Cask at the Bell, Waltham St Lawrence. Pale amber with a loose white head; grassy aroma; sweet and grassy to start and then with a growing bitterness; and a fresh and crisp finish. I assumed that this was a "real lager" rather than a bitter - and jolly nice it was.

Cask at The Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a crystal clear amber with a frothy white, long lasting head. The aroma is big malt and fruit. The flavour is medium bitter, malty and a smooth fruity palate and aftertaste. Really tasty.

Cask at the Pretty Bricks, Walsall. Poured a clear golden brown with a thin white head and broken lace. The aroma is malty with citrus notes leading to a medium bitter malty peachy flavour. The palate is super smooth. A really satisfying session beer from BCA and perfect for the fireside.

Hand-pulled pint in ’The Wellington’ Birmingham (West Midlands) on 5th Dec 2012. Dark ruby in colour with a good solid tan head. Malts rule the brew in every aspect with the hops just about giving the beer a semi-bitter finish as the mouth dries. Smooth feel to the overall tasting, nothing strong or robust in the flavours: just hints of better things. All the regular Mild tastes are here but only just, bits of chocolate, coffee and liquorice blend together without really hitting the high notes. Easy to drink and pleasant enough, but lacking a real punch.

Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green - 07/09/12. Clear chestnut brown with a thin bubbly off-white head. Malt, barley, grain, toffee and a little background fruit on the nose. Taste follows, fairly bland even for a mild. Medium body with moderate carbonation, Creamy finish with a little bitterness. Looks and feels very good, just the all important inbetween bits let it down a little, but overall a decent enough mild.
