About
Shock Top is a traditional Belgian-Style wheat ale. It was originally created in 2006 as a seasonal brew under the name Spring Heat Spiced Wheat. After collecting gold in ’06 and bronze in ’07 in the Belgian White category at the North American Beer Awards, we decided to brew year-round and switch the name to Shock Top. We couldn’t be happier with our decision. And the best decision you can make is to try some Shock Top for yourself.

Wheat IPA? Okay, sounds interesting. Well, I’ve had this several times, let’s say something about this.
Most of the time, I’ve had this in pint glasses, but once I experimented with a weizen glass. Basically, the only thing that happened was that the head lasted an exceptionally long time. I think at least a good 4 minutes (too long, perhaps, unsure).
Here we go.
The appearance was a hazy orange to brown color with a one finger white foamy head in the pint glass. The head in the weizen glass was about a good three fingers sustaining. The lacing in both glasses was fairly thick and in both glasses, it slid right into the beer.
The smell had mostly a thick wheatiness about it, and that was about it.
The taste had a thick wheaty flavoring about it.
The palate was about a medium in the body with a fairly thick carbonation allowing the wheat to combine to give a certain fullness about this beer.
Overall, did I like this? Hmmm...well, I did what the side of the bottle said (the pour 2/3 of the bottle and then swirl and pour the rest and serve part). After following the instructions, hmmm...I still didn’t think it helped it too much. Anyways, okay, well next beer, please. But my last words, well, this wasn’t much of an IPA or a wheat beer. I really don’t know what Budweiser was really trying to do with this one.

Draft: Faint lemon aroma. Cloudy amber, thin head. Banana and wheat bred crust, stale malt. Lemon overtones., fusel alcohol. Stinging mouthfeel. Didn’t deliver on the bourbon which is fine by me. The mention of xask is an empty marketing ploy. It does have wheat characteristics, otherwise this would have been rated much lower.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a large foamy brown head that faded and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was tangy with a little bit of cocoa, cola and licorice. The flavor was malty chocolate, vanilla, vague dark fruits and caramel. Long finish. Moderately full bodied and creamy. Surprisingly pleasant.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours a hazy orange with a small, short lived white head. Sweet aroma of citrus, malt and wheat. Sweet flavour of citrus, caramel and malt with a bitter finish. Medium body with a slick texture and average carbonation.

I poured this into a pint glass.
The appearance was a fairly yellow transparency that looked like someone squeezed a lemon in it. Carbonated bubbles rose rapidly and filled a one finger white foamy head that rapidly dissipated.
The smell, well, it was definitely lemon, I’ll tell ya that. However, was it authentic? I really don’t know.
The taste was bitter lemon in it, but I didn’t get any spices in it. The aftertaste was bitter lemon and a super watery finish.
On the palate, it sat fairly light and showed a decent sessionable quality about it. The carbonation was decent for a fruit beer and not bad to me.
Overall, I say this wasn’t a bad fruit beer, but not one I’d want again.

12oz bottle from Orchard Fresh, Orchard Park, NY. So there’s nothing wrong with Wheat Beer, with Honey, or with Bourbon Casks, but in whose imagination would it be sensible to combine the three - some marketing executive I guess. Well, he was wrong!
A hazy amber colour with a scummy head; the aroma has some vanilla from the oak casks, but little else; the taste is a combination of the vanilla and sweet, sickly honey over a grainy base. It just doesn’t come together for me.

12oz bottle from Orchard Fresh, Orchard Park, NY. I was rather apprehensive having read some of hte other reviews of this, but actually it’s (slightly) better than I was expecting. It’s an unappetising hazy straw pour with a thin white head; the aroma is of fresh apple, rather than cider; the taste is of rather sweet fresh apple juice as well, with an underlyign grainy body from the wheat; the finish is crisp, clean and refreshing.

I give this a better grade because it damn well tastes like pretzel. Some light crisp papery salt finish. Lots of pretzel. Bread yeast. Scored this by sneaking into the VIP section by acting like Omar from the Wire and watching and waiting. Some salt. On tap at DC Summerfest.
