[5/11] Tap, listed at 10.2% ABV. Black with a dense light tan head. Looks fantastic, settles like a nitro pour over more than five minutes. Aroma of chocolate, nutmeg, some citrus and caramelized bananas. Slightly powdery mouthfeel. Full but not syrupy. Hides the alcohol very well indeed. Very chocolaty taste with banana, vanilla, cardamom, nutmeg, aniseed. Fairly light on the roasted flavours with no particular roasted bitterness evident, although given how chocolaty it is it’s not that sweet. Some herbal elements - chicory - that didn’t work for me are maybe what gave a suggestion of sourness. Citrus and spice clean up at the end. Pretty good. [3.7][7/13] Bottle, 9.1% ABV. Black with a coat of brown head. Aroma of chocolate, herbs, banana (less than the tap version), coffee, soft licorice, roasted malt is there but mild - all quite Eastern European. Sweet with a rather dry finish. Mocha, berries, some banana, dark fudge. Again some weird herbal notes. Low to moderate bitterness. [3.4] Averaging-ish score. Expected this in the bottle to answer some questions, but no. [11/17]Black with a brown head that lightens to a tan coat. A: Mocha, banana, herbs, blackberries. Sticky sweet. And big but broad in the 'not going anywhere in particular' sense. There's brioche-ish bread, licorice, mocha, dark berries, citrus - all fine, but it's such a jumble. However, it does dry out a bit and there's enough bitterness to invite another sip. But eh, I still don't get this. [3.3]

Tap, served through an infuser filled with caperberries. Hazy pale yellow with a small but lacy white head. Aroma has damp hessian, caperberries. Very much like wheat sprouting on damp cloth in the shade. Taste has a little almost-but kind-of-vegetable sweetness from the caperberries before salt and lactic sourness. Reminds me of Manzanilla sherry more than anything else. An elegant aperitif with good but moderate sourness. A little dried orange peel and coriander in a dry, salty finish.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of bluebetty. Clear golden with an off-white head. Fresh citrusy nose - almost perfumy. Medium body, a little sweet fruitiness and again lots of fresh citrus. Dry and hoppy finish. Very decent - certainly has the hops, but perhaps not much more than an APA. 150311

[2/11] Tap. Clear dark brown with a light beige head - looks like a schwarzbier in a taster; darker in a proper glass. Clean hoppy aroma with bitter orange, some tropical fruit (rambutans?) and gooseberry. Hints of mocha behind. Fairly graceful aroma. No obvious roast in aroma. Slightly nutty, creamy texture. No roasted flavours. A little chocolate that’s barely sweet. Not much that’s portery about it at all. Long moderate bitter finish. Harmonious and just mouthfilling. [7/15] Bottle. Seems to have arrived safely.

From a 330ml bottle on 19/1/2011. Pours golden orange with a substantial head. Has a lovely, powerful floral, piney, fruity (lychee) aroma. In the mouth it’s very fruity (orange and grapefruit), with sweet toffee malt set off against a big, but not overwhelming, hop kick, which lingers. A superb American style IPA, and one of the best Aussie beers out there.

[12/10] Tap. Bright clear copper with an off white head that’s angry with a swirl. Slightly creamy mouthfeel Aroma has stone (nectarine), tropical (pineapple, passionfruit) fruits and citrus with some caramel. Some toffeeapple in the taste along with the hop aromatics. Plenty of bitterness. Feral, indeed. And pretty shouty. Not really my sort of thing, but it gets away with it pretty well with huge flavours that just avoid being harsh and some semblance of balance. [3.6] Ha, that long ago. Bottle, a MoonDogEsq label. Toffee and stewed fruit underneath stone and tropical fruit. Bitterness struggles up enough to really register but not so much as to seem harsh. Still - Red IPA - not at all my sort of thing but well enough done to be likeable. [3.5] but let’s leave as is.

Pours orange/amber with a small head.Nose shows loads of citrus fruits: tangerine and kumquat at the forefront. Also shows some lychee and apple. Very summery. Underneath is a fair helping of clean sweet malt.Flavours are quite different, with very little fruit. Instead the hops contribute piney resin. Once again there’s a lot of sweet malt underneath. The bitterness is quite sharp, not all that pleasant.Carbonation is a little high.
