Description
La Chavagn' was born from the desire to transform a passion into a real profession… brewer. Indeed, after seventeen years as an employee for the industry in the food industry, including five as a brewer, Chavagn' was born in November 2013.

It all started in the town of Coly, where the brewery has been established since 2016. This small village of 220 inhabitants takes its name from the river which refreshes it and which has its source in La Cassagne, a few kilometers away. Pure Coly water is used to make Chavagn 'beers.

The brewery has chosen to work only with malts, French hops, local raw materials (cereals and fruits) without processing aids (enzymes, acids) and without preservatives.

The Rauchbier in Chavagn's La Passante series, 75 cl bottle shared by Francis at Loick's Lovulum tasting in Ghent; apparently the bottle was procured from a shop in a French village I myself visited one week later - it's a small world. Off-white, dense and moussy, stable head over a hazy peach blonde beer with deep ochre-ish tinge. Aroma indeed smoked but in a burnt cardboard and bonfire kind of way rather than the smoked bacon I was hoping for, bread crust, dried peach, rusk, unripe apricot - and paper ashes again inelegantly pushing through. Clean, sweetish onset, some fruity notes of peach and apple peel, medium fizz, rounded rusk-like maltiness, bread-crusty and cereally, with that smoky element returning as, again, burnt cardboard and paper ashes instead of the fleshy umami effect I always look for in Rauchbier. Light floral hop touch, but soft in bitterness. Simplistic, run-of-the-mill blonde ale with a non-fitting, weird papery smokiness put on top - this is a far cry from the Bamberg Rauchbiere.
