Description
Founded in 1995, The Grainstore Brewery was formed through the collaboration of two friends, Tony Davis formally Head Brewer and Production Director at Ruddles Brewery and Mike Davies of Davro Fabrication. With Tony’s 30 years of brewing experience behind them, and Mike’s engineering and steel fabrication expertise at their disposal, the two set to work on a derelict Victorian grain store situated next to Oakham Railway Station. Following renovation of the building and the lowering into position of the large fermenting vessels, copper and conditioning tanks, the brewery tap opened its doors in September 1995. The 15 barrel brew house plant with its capacity to brew 60 barrels per week, started brewing its first brew, ‘Cooking Bitter’ a few months later. This tradition has since been continued by Tony’s son William Davis and his business partner Peter Atkinson, as the brewery and Tap go from strength to strength.

Bottle split in the hotel room in Tacoma, with Ferris, 07/11/14 thanks to James F for acquiring this bottle for us. Clear golden amber with a moderate off white covering. Nose is peppered with diacetyl, candied fruit, vanilla. Taste comprises floral notes, lavendar, caramel. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close with light hops and a prefume trace. Pretty Meh !

50cl bottle at Appellation Wines Comely Bank tasting - this one from allmyvinyl. Appearance - amber with a cream head that falls away quite quickly. Nose - toffee, with just a suggestion of biscuits going on too. Taste - more toffee and maybe butterscotch. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a finish that is just too sweet. Overall - nothing wrong with it, it’s solid, but it’s nothing special. An ESB can have many more levels of complexity than this.

Clear brilliant reddish amber colour, dissipating white head. Aroma of straw, caramel, light green twigs, hint butterscotch. Sweet malty flavour, caramel, light biscuit, corn, honey. Malty finish, light straw, bit sweet buttery notes reminding of toast with butter and honey. Bit on the sweet side, but still an enjoyable Bitter.

Tried at a bistro in Stamford. The beer was probably past its prime,. Amber colour with no head. The aroma was a touch musty. The taste was flat, but had the promise of malt and a nice bitter finish.

Re-rate: Handpull cask on All Souls' Day 2019 at the King's Head, Stamford. A very different beer than the one described previously: it's golden in colour with aroma of sweet spice and St Clements. Sweet taste with some nutmeg and peach nectar in the finish. 3.6, Avg 3.4 Cask at Bankers Draft (JDW), Bedford. Dark gold/copper. Respectable white head. Sulphurous floral aroma isn’t up to much. Bitter taste with a sour edge. Finish is nice and long with tannic grassy notes. Not a great beer by any stretch of the imagination but good enough on the night, with lots of character. 3.2

Bottle shared with Dutchdrebus @ Dutchdrebus’ birthday. Dark brown color with a deep dark red glare coming through. Average sized light brown head that leaves fair to good lacing. Aroma is malts, lightly roast. Taste malts, lightly roast, lightly a hint of dark fruit and chocolate, lightly bitter. Decent body and carbonation. Quite nice.
