Czech winter ale (not lager, mind you) shared by Jasper Pollet, who apparently brought it straight from the brewery, located in Chyše, about 60 miles west of Prague in the Czech Republic. Moussey, greyish off-white, quite firm and stable, medium sized head on a hazy chestnut brown beer with bronze glow. Aroma of ground old hazelnuts, soggy brown bread, toast, dried peach, apple peel, hard dry caramel, some fried bacon very far away. Dryish onset, dried apricot, medlar, apple peel – proportionally low in esters for an ale, clean and medium carbonated with slick mouthfeel; dry-caramelly and brown-bread-crusty malts with a light hazelnutty touch (in a non-sweet kind of way), finishing softly, restrainedly malt sweet with equally soft herbal hops (touch of dry tea), bittering but not more so than the inherent toasty aspect of the malts – so remaining in perfect balance. Having grown up with Belgian style winter ales, I was expecting something over the top in terms of added spice, but this is a very balanced, easy drinker, only gently warming (of course the average ABV ‘standards’ are traditionally much lower in the Czech Republic than in Belgium) but quite satisfying. Style-wise, I am not sure what to make of it, though, but considering how Scottish (and Scotch) ale stood model for many oldskool winter warmers including Belgian Christmas ale, I personally think this beer is best classified in the Scottish ale family (rather than the American ale family), also because of the relative cleanness, restraint in spiciness and soft toasty aspect of the dark malts.

Tap at Rychte. Murky brown, lasting thick tan head. Sweetish coffeish malty aroma. Lean, fresh, coffeish, light chocolate, herbal touches, lightly bitterish and vaguely tart (but not off!) taste. Good, drinkable tmavé!
