On this drinking day in history, in 1588 the English successfully navigated the channel to scatter the Spanish Armada with fireships at Gravelines. This navigator is dark clear golden with a creamy head. Hoppy in the main, mild malts, session material being easy in strength and texture.

Deadication beer to Cumbrian born Victoria Cross winner Robert Beatham, died on this day at war in 1918. Clear golden-blonde, hoppy, good strength but pleasing soft texture, giving it a fine aftertaste.

Gravicask, half-pint, shared with Finn. Moderate smell of caramel malts and leafy hops. Quite similar taste of mild caramel malts, leafy hops and yeast. Bittersweet ending. True to the style, more or less.

Gravicask, half-pint, shared with Finn. A deep black body, poor lacing, missing head. Roasted malt-driven aromas, moments of dark chocolate. Black chocolate malt to the taste profile, mid-sweet. Dark malty depth to the finish, nicely roasted. Soft on the swallow. Nice.

Gravicask, half pint, shared with Finn. Clear mahogany coloured body, shiny naked surface, dotted spots on the glass. Moderate aromas of earthy malts, scents of herbal hops. Blended taste with a note of brittle caramel and leafy hops. Ends on the sweet side of bittersweet. Fair enough.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a reddish brown with minimal off-white head. Some nuttiness in the aroma but not much. Nuts fruit and malt are the mainstays in the mouth, with some underlying bitterness. Later on some citrus and oranges come to the fore. Finish is slightly bitter. OK – a bit nondescript but drinkable.
