Description
The starting point for the history of the Zaporizhzhia plant was the adoption of the Plan of Economic Development for the USSR Republics in the early 1970s. The document was set to solve the problem of the acute shortage of beer in the country. The Plan included the construction of about 22 beer brewing plants with the annual output capacity of 45—60 million liters of beer each. The construction of one of the first brewing plants according to a novel design by Czech engineers, started in 1971, with a record capacity for that time of 72 million liters of beer a year. Czech professionals were supervising the installation and checkout of equipment, as well as trained their Ukrainian colleagues to operate it. On December 12, 1974, the personnel of the Zaporizhzhia Beer Plant No. 2 made their first brew, and the first batch of beer was bottled on January 15, 1975. The new product was gaining popularity at a fast speed.

In 1976, the plant joined the Zaporizhzhia Industrial Association of Beer and Soft Drink Producers, which then was in operation until 1984. In 1986, the history of the plant saw the start of a campaign to fight alcohol addiction. Back in those years, sales quotas were introduced for the product, so this led to a significant drop in production output. For a while, beer had been in short supply. The years of Perestroika were also tough on the plant, with the economic crisis of the late 1980s worsening the matter. Ukraine was suffering from the collapse of the financial and payment systems, as well as from the disruption of economic links with the Soviet republics. However, despite all the challenges, the production was running virtually non-stop.

Ogi’s, from Bratislava. Poured a pale, nice copper body, with a slightly off white head. Cherry tea nose, dust. Sweet cherry hard candy taste. Not too unbalanced and yet... Hmm. Not your typical beer mix, for good or for worse.

Ogi’s, from Bratislava. Poured a golden body with a small white head that went away slowly. Sharp lemony gummibear nose, sweet strong gummibear taste, fake, yes, doesn’t work that well, but it’s kinda interesting really.

500ml can, many thanks to Gaute. Shared with Finn. Deep brown pour, bright naked surface. Sweet smell of berries. Strawberries and cherries in flavour. Supersweet and soft in the mouth. Possible to drink, not as a beer, but as a sweet soft drink (Tromsø, 01.05.2012).

Can. Now this is a really disgusting thing. Darker amber colour. Medium airy short-lasting head. Aroma of cherry, nothing more, strong artificial cherry. Taste medium to heavy sweet. Finish medium sweet, this really sticks to your mouth like glue. Not a trace of beer, poor even as a lemonade.

Can. Clear yellow colour. Medium airy quickly diminishing head. Aroma of lime, very minor hops. Nothing more, uninteresting. Taste medium to heavy sweet, again nothing more. Finish light sweet. Poor substitute for a beer, average lemonade for summer months.

Originally rated September 2005. Date of production is 24/05/05 and ABV is 5.3%. Pours a yellow colour with many tiny particules floating around. The head is full of miniscule bubbles forming a creamy head that has good retention. The lacing is pretty decent and chunky-looking white spots are left on the brew. Not much carbonation and fizzy mouthfeel. The nose is not much, but slight malt and bread. Smooth start and a grassy finish. Mild bitterness in the aftertaste. Not a bad taste and not a bad brew, but nothing exciting or new.

Canette 500ml.
