Sample at the brewpub. The beer is a dark golden color with a medium off-white head that dissipates steadily. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of chocolate, malt and fruit. Medium to full body with flavor of chocolate malt, fruity yeast and mild earthy hops. The finish is sweet with a chocolatey aftertaste. Decent overall.

Sample at the brewpub. The beer pours pitch black with a medium khaki head that diminishes gradually to a dense film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon, malt and coffee. Light to medium body with flavors of bourbon, malt and coffee. The finish is roasty with an oaky bourbon and malt aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Purchased at Siciliano's Market in Grand Rapids, MI; enjoyed at home on a cool late summer evening. Appearance is pitch black with a rich tan head, looks great. Aroma is very much heavy on the coffee notes along with dark chocolate, smells awesome. Taste is very good, dry and bitter with espresso flavor, delicious. Would have again.

Can sampled @ Hopishop #3. Black syrup with no head. Nose is umami, herbal, coffee beans are big but they are more herbal rather than fresh roast. Taste is same big overly herbal coffee, dangerously close to vegetable, herbal, coffee, syrup, low chocolate, some roast. Big herbal coffee body. Espresso beans are a big here but too herbal for me, as opposed to fresh roast (not sure what the right term is but you know what I mean). Overall okay but should have been better.

22 ounce bottle into pint glass; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours fairly crystal clear deep golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of cracker, corn, vanilla, light honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, light pear/apple, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of pale malt, vanilla, and light-moderate earthy hop/yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of cracker, corn, vanilla, light honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, light pear/apple, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, corn, vanilla, light honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, light pear/apple, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt, vanilla, and light-moderate earthy hop/yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness and lower body. Medium-high carbonation and light bodied; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and lightly grainy/creamy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.5%. Overall this is a very nice creamy ale style! All around good robustness and balance of pale malt, vanilla, and light-moderate earthy hop/yeast ester flavors; and very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/15/2015. Pours clear very dark brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, light pepper, pine, caramel, brown sugar, spicy rye, toasted brown bread, light chocolate/cocoa/coffee, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and dark/roast/rye bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, light pepper, pine, caramel, brown sugar, spicy rye, toasted brown bread, light chocolate/cocoa, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness and rye spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon/orange rind, pepper, pine, caramel, brown sugar, spicy rye, toasted brown bread, light roast, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and dark/roast/rye bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent hop/rye flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and baody; with a very smooth, sticky/resinous, and lightly creamy/bready/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Brown IPA style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical/piney hops and dark/roast/rye bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. The hop notes came off a bit weird against the malt character at first; but after I got used to them, they turned out very well balanced and delicious. I think this could be better with an adjusted hop bill, but it was still very enjoyable.

A very unique, but well done remix of CEO stout. Some light dryness from yeast spice and tannic barrel notes. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/silky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible barrel aged Dubbel style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, oak barrel, and dark malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to sip on. This had a lot of similar flavor complexity to some barrel aged Quads I’ve had before, but at a much lower ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
