Description
Highland Brewing was founded in 1994 by retired engineer and entrepreneur Oscar Wong, establishing it as the pioneer of Asheville, NC’s booming craft beer industry. With a portfolio that is equal parts established and inventive, Highland is known for consistently excellent beer. Proudly regional, Highland is distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky. Highland is the largest independent family-owned brewery born in the Southeast, with the third largest solar array in an American craft brewery. The brewery is in a rehabilitated manufacturing facility on a hilltop, affording space for thousands of visitors to enjoy limited release beers, tours, and live music. In addition, the event center and rooftop can be reserved for private events. Since 2015, the company has been led by Wong’s daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn, and has 50 full-time employees.

Pour is an almost clear yellow with a large white head. Aroma is a soft bready malt with just a hint of grassy hops. Flavor is more is a richer bread malt with more of a noble hop presence. Pretty solid pils here. Decent malt presence with just a kiss of European hops and this one is a pretty refreshing beer.

Can into a chalice. Filled 6/29 so exactly 2 weeks old. A: Rich gold with a hint of orange tint. A ton of coarse crud floating in suspension almost like OJ. Small, fading head and rings of lace. S: Light aroma. Sweet orange marmalade, white toast with hints of honey and citrus pith. T: Tart citrus hop bite. A green note. Malt mostly lost but a faint sweetness on the finish. The fresh orange taste is there but I don’t taste much beer. M: Light on body and carbonation. Bitter and watery with pulp. O: Not a fan of this. Orange and little to nothing else. Furthermore, the orange is a little overdone. I need to stop trying these stupid fruited beers.

12 oz. can filled 5/9/2016/ into a pilsner. A: Clear pale yellow. Bubby with a finger of foam. Decent retention. S: Biscuit and leaves/ grass. Smells like a lot of pilsners lately. T: Spicy black pepper hop bite over sweet bready malts. M: Good coating carbonation feel in a light bodied, crisp and refreshing lager. O: Good though I expected a more intense hop experience. Also on the verge of being too sweet. Pretty good but not a regular purchase.
