Description
In 1872, Jules Vanneste bought the ‘t Hamerken distillery. In 1889, he took the step of definitively converting the distillery into a brewery. Soon, ‘t Hamerken top-fermentation beers became a household name in the Bruges area. Brewing continued till 1982.

In 1983, Paul Vanneste (great-grandson of the founder) founded the new De Gouden Boom brewery in collaboration with Frank Boon Brewery from Lembeek. In 1985 Brouwerij De Gouden Boom is granted a licence to brew the STEENBRUGGE abbey beers.

On 16 November 2001, PALM brewery acquired a majority interest in Brouwerij De Gouden Boom and in 2003 it was completely taken over by Palm Brewery. In the same year the Prior of St Peter’s Abbey in Steenbrugge licensed PALM Breweries to brew STEENBRUGGE abbey beers.

Since 2004 production of Bruges beers has been relocated to the PALM Breweries site in Steenhuffel.

Flesje thuis gedronken. Smaak trekt snel weg.

(Keg at Janoinen Lohi, 20200110) The beer poured deep golden and clear. Its head was large, white and it lasted long. Aroma had clove, honey and grass. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were clove, honey, sweetness, grass, malts and bitterness. Aftertaste was spicy and bitter. A strong brew with hefeweizen yeast?

0,33 bottle.

Unfiltered, pale golden color, solid foam, white duvet. It smells like coriander, orange peel, citrus, but still yeasty, wheat, I imagined it to be like that. More carbonated than average, slightly more disembodied than medium :) easy to drink Belgian wheat. As it warms up in the glass, it smells more and more delicate. The taste is citrus with banana notes, yeast is also a bit, all wheat notes come out very well. You feel like you’re drinking real wheat beer, yet it’s not Bavarian. (not as if that's wrong) can come at any time. More summer drink than winter :)

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Aldi Culemborg. Clear dark copper with a big off-white head. Sweet caramel aroma with a hint of yeasty esters. Sweet taste with a bittersweet finish. Yes it's a cheap supermarket 'abbey' ale but I've had far worse than this.

0.33 bottle.

Beautiful huge beige foam, chestnut- red color. It smells delicious dried fruit, very roundy, it's okay. Full body, good sense of sip. Taste caramel malt, small sweets, plums, dried fruity delicate finish, similar to double-bock's. Delicious stuff, specifically aromatic, delicious, (candy) sugar did not spoil it.

33 cl. bottle @ Rick. Clear light reddish brown with an off-white head. Caramel aroma with some lightly roasted malts. Medium bitter taste with a bitter finish. Alcohol is very well hidden. A bit overcarbonated but it's a nice intended for the supermarket beer.
