Lab Monkey - Simcoe & Columbus from Monkey Paw Brewing

Tap at Capitol Beer Fest. Pours hazy gold with a white head. Aroma is citrus and earthy. Med + body. Flavor is strong - citrus, earth, fruit. Caramel for support. Finishes bitter and hoppy. Really tasty.

Sample at the Aces & Ales Winter Beer Fest on 01/18/2015. Flat black pour with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked malt, chocolate and hops. Medium body with flavors of charred malt, dark chocolate and mild hops. The finish is smoky with an earthy hops and malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Sample at the Aces & Ales Winter Beer Fest on 01/17/2015. The beer is a clear brownish-amber color with a medium off-white head that dissipates steadily. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, caramel and hops. Medium body with flavors of caramel malt, citrus and mild hops. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Keg at the taproom, SD, 12/11/14. Murky mahogany brown with a moderate beige covering - not a looker just avoids a 2 ! Nose is malty, dark fruit rinds, light spice. Taste comprises dark fruit rinds, sweeter than the nose suggests, light spice, biscuit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with sweetish tones. Ok but no game changer.

Keg at the taproom, SD, 12/11/14. Extremely dark mahogany brown topped with a decent light tan swirl. Nose is light charr, toffee fudge, nutty, hoppy back pang. Taste comprises sweet licks, caramel, liqourice, toasted brown sugar. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with sweet licks and some hop presence. Ok but just a little overly sweet for me.

Keg at the brewpub in SD, 12/11/14. Lightly hazed chestnut brown with decent light beige covering. Nose is earthy hops, perfumed notes, candied fruit peel, red grapefruit, orange, straw. Taste comprises bitter citric rinds, blood orange, spice, earthy hops, caramel malt, light pine needle. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok amber.

Keg at MP brewpub, SD, 12/11/14. Hazed amber with a moderate beige covering. Nose is raspberries, spice, biscuit, cocoa rub. Taste comprises more raspberry, vanilla, straw, biscuit, earthy cocoa notes. Medium bodied, fine carbonation - smooth on the palate, sweet licks in the close. Ok.

Very dark brown color. Smooth body, chocolate, cloves, with smoke very subdued. Very drinkable and alcohol well hidden, but nothing very exciting about this beer. Chocolate finish. It’s like so well.

Keg at Monkey Paw, SD, 12/11/14. Black with a moderate tan covering. Nose is bitter roast, molasses, liqourice, smoked ham, dark frutis. Taste comprises sweet notes, dark fruit, sticky toffee, chocolate. Medium + bodu, fine carbonation, semi drying close and a touch cloying. Basic for style, lacks balance and depth.

Keg at Monkey Paw, SD, 12/11/14. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a moderate tan covering. Nose is light roast, smokey tones, liqourice, tobacco. Taste comprises dark fruit notes, dark toffee, cocoa rub, earthy, light smoke. Medium + bosy, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok brown if a little sweet and cloying at times.
